I think we're all scared of Locker getting hurt again, but in this hypothetical I'm going to do something just a little different.

Lets say Locker has a season where he throws...24 touchdowns, 9 interceptions and around 7.8 YPA. Those aren't "set in stone" numbers, just to give a general guideline. Lets say he does that in a season where he only starts 14 games because of injury keeping him out of 2 straight games. We go to the playoffs, maybe win a game there, he plays relatively well while there and we go in to the off-season with this question:

What to do with Locker?

Do you give him a contract? How big of one if so?

Given we're in the playoffs in this scenario, keep in mind we're picking in the mid to late 20s in the draft, in case drafting a QB was going to be one of your options.

So, do you go with Locker? Give him a multi-year contract?

Slap the franchise tag on him for a year, see if he can do it 2 years in a row?

Say it's not worth the risk of a serious injury in the future and cut ties/find a different QB?

Just curious as to what you all would do in this situation.

It's a make or break year for Jake.

His offensive line is stacked and can provide decent cover for Jake. If he shows us his durability, hopefully he can continue his upward trend from last year. Wiz has a solid history with QB's as well.

Worse case scenario they let him walk, best case scenario they franchise tag him unless he leads the team to Phoenix in February 2015. Wink
If they go .500 or better this year they will not be in range to pick a new franchise QB in the 2015 draft unless they trade up. IMO

Honestly it comes down to two things. Wins and his durability which we all know.

If it was me, if he misses games again this year but we make the playoffs I would give him an extension but it would not be obscene. To me I don't think he has earned the right to command a huge contract even if he is healthy all year this year. He would have to severely light it up.

If he puts up the numbers you suggested TitanLegend that is tough because those are solid numbers.

The one thing that is interesting about this is while Mettenberger a lot on here I see don't think he has anything, I think this staff and Whisenhunt like him. Not saying if Locker leaves Mettenberger is our starter but it is interesting to watch.

Say Locker plays 10 games this year and let's say has 15 TDs and 6 interceptions. Sure he had decent stats but he missed 6 games again. Most teams cannot survive six games without their starting QB.

It is a good hypothetical and will be interesting.

If we go 10-6 or so and win a playoff game with that statline with only missing 2 games, I'd franchise him. Covers us for another year(yea it'll be high). If he fails or misses a big amount of time in 2015 and we have a bad season, move on. Honestly though, even if we have that season, and a guy like Hundley fell to us in the 20's I'd still take him.

The Kaep deal opens up the possibility of team friendlier contracts... I wouldn't give Locker the type of numbers Kaep got, by any means... but any contract would have to include similar structure.

Ie, part of Kaep's "salary" includes 2M per year worth of per-game roster bonuses... a figure that's included as "salary" because its an LTBE incentive(s). If he misses a game, he doesn't get 1/16 of that 2M (~$125k). Not only does the team not financially pay that amount, they also get a credit for that amount the following cap season (because the current years' cap included those bonuses as likely to be earned... and since they weren't earned but still charged to the cap, they would need to be credited the following season).

If he gets 24 TDs in 14 games, and gets a playoff win... I believe he's done enough to warrant an extension.

I would say something along the lines of 5 years, worth ~60M. Not elite money... but very good money for a QB (top 10... could be sold to him as "Tom Brady money"). The guarantees would say $30M or so, but real guaranteed money would be ~20M (mostly from the SB and first year salary, which equates to just over what a franchise tag would carry).

If they wanted to fluff the contract to 6 years, $75M with no increases in bonus money, I'd be alright with that as well. 8 years, $100M? Eh... yeah, why not?... as long as the "real" guaranteed money stays in the $20-25M range.
