Joe Greene was the player who changed the culture of the Steelers from losers to winners. More than any other player in Steelers history, he deserves to have his number retired.

Congratulations to #75, Joe Greene. Very Happy

Not NFL News....

but no they haven't retired his number and retiring numbers is not something the Steelers do (often).

Only 1 number in team history is retired.

Forget the number but it is Ernie Stautner's... found it

Quote:
On October 25, 1964, Stautner became the first player to have his number (70) formally retired by the Steelers

Very well deserved... Joe Greene is the most important player in Steeler history!!! Glad no one will ever wear 75 again.

The Steelers are very cautious about retiring numbers, primarily because of the politics involved in the process, but also because they'd risk a shortage of numbers at some positions if every great Steeler had his number retired. The reason Joe Greene's number is being retired is because he's unanimously considered to be the most important player in franchise history.

Many jersey numbers are "unofficially" retired, such as #12, #32, #36, #58, #59 and #86. I expect the same for #7 and #43 eventually.

My thoughts exactly, how does a guy who was the corner stone of the 4 time champion legendary steel curtain defense take 30+years to retire his jersey?

From my understanding they did it the one time and then decided not to retire a number again. So that's why it wasn't ever done... Now since they've decided to change that policy they started with the obvious choice!
