http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/10923709/patrick-peterson-arizona-cardinals-thinks-worth-more-richard-sherman

^ in this article, Cardinals fans learn two main things:
1. Peterson thinks he is worth more than Richard Sherman which recived a 57M$ (40M$ garenteed) 4-year extension contract from the Seahawks
2. the Cardinals FO has already exchanged talks with Peterson about a extension

the thing I think about, is Peterson worth more than (hands down) the best shutdown corner in the league, Richard Sherman, some will agree, and others will disagree, I have decided to do a breakdown of each corner to see which is truly worth a big contract.

1. Upside
- Peterson is one of the more feared CB's in the league due to nice physical traits, and with the added value of being a stud special teams player and electrifying with the ball in his hand, his upside is really amazing...

- however Sherman's upside is even bigger, his major size with good speed makes him the Megatron of CB's, and his physical ball-hawking skills is unmatched by any other CB, he is shutdown in every aspect.
Edge: Sherman

2. Production, Consistency
- this is the part where Peterson struggled last year, not with consistency, but with production, having minimal Punt-Return and Run-Defense production (especially later in the year), some question his 2013 performance, he needs to get a boost in terms of his production and make himself not feared on the field, but known...

- on the other hand, 8 INT's and several up-front stops shows Sherman's ability to make plays where he is needed, and throughout his career he has been a force, there is no where he has not produced.
Edge: Sherman

3. Versatility
- Peterson had shown weakness in run-defense, but that's just about it. this guy can return kicks and is a special teams STUD, also Peterson has the built in ability to line up with the #1 receiver anywhere, wither its in the slot or on either side of the field.

- Sherman is a great production guy on defense, but sadly he can only do so many things. first off he has minimal ST production, while he still has some nice ability there, he does not stand out, he also has a thing with the strong side of the field, he is lined up there a lot and some times on tape he will play the #2 receiver because the main receiver is not in his house.
Edge: Peterson

off-the field behavior and relationships

do I need to explain this?
Edge: Peterson

so depending on what value you put where, Peterson and Sherman are close when it comes to the whole picture, Sherman is better on the field on defense, while Peterson is better on ST and off the field (while still being a defensive stud).

so what do you guys think, does Peterson deserve what Sherman got or more?

Is he is better on field cover corner than Richard Sherman. No. Not at this stage. In the end it likely will not matter. Sherman set the market. Peterson is going to want to re-set it. Thing is; if it gets too expensive, you can look into a franchise tag in back to back years which gives us at least another 3 years of Peterson, and time to determine whether or not he is, in fact, worth the extension he wants.

Also, what is so wrong with Sherman off the field that you don't see the need to address it? The adderall that he was never found guilty of? The statements he made on the field in the playoffs? What is so bad about Sherman off the field?

No real issue for 2 years anyway

5th year option 2014

Franchise tag in 2015

then decide if we want long term deal or another franchise tag in 2016

all good, love that new CBA

Browns just signed CB Joe Haden to a 5-year extension worth $68 million with $45 million in guaranteed money.

And Peterson noticed:

Patrick Peterson on Sherman: ''I'm better, he's not a shutdown CB''

Quote:
"I don't want to get into that debate as far as the stats that he has and things he has," Peterson said. "Obviously, his job is definitely much easier than mine. If you look at their scheme and look at our scheme, he's a Cover 3 corner. Period."

Peterson acknowledged that fans will likely only look at interceptions, and Sherman wins that category. He has 20 interceptions since 2011, compared to Peterson's 12.

"He's only covering space. He's not really covering a guy," Peterson said. "At the end of the day, he has great stats and he has great playmaking ability, not taking that away from him because he is a good corner.

"But as far as being a shutdown corner, man-to-man guy, in my eyes, I don't believe he's that."

They both play CB in the NFL and got drafted in 2011

Other than that, not much in common, different schemes, responsibilities etc

Apples and Oranges for me

well it looks like a PP21 vs Sherman feud is begging to ignite...

just today, PP21 said: "Sherman (in a man-on-man system) is not a shutdown corner"

Sherman's reaction:
