Quote:
Colts RB Vick Ballard limps off field and is carted away, according to onlookers at camp.

- Per Adam Schefter on Twitter.

They let Brown go in the offseason and are now stuck with Richardson and an injury prone Bradshaw to carry their load on offense if the Ballard injury is serious. Not what Luck was hoping for, I imagine.

UPDATE:

Quote:
Adam Schefter ‏@AdamSchefter 59m

Brutal... RT @mortreport: Colts RB Vick Ballard tore his Achilles, sources say. He was carted off the field earlier.

Aw damn...and he went down with an ACL tear last year too.

Sucks...this guy has potential and would be better than Richardson IMO if he were healthy.

But hey...now at least we will see if Richardson can be the back the Colts thought he could be when they traded for him. Smart money is on no.

oof. If it's a complete rupture he could be done. Mikel Leshoure tore his and hasn't been the same since, a complete rupture would be even worse.

FWIW this is not the same leg that the ACL tear was on last year. This was the left the ACL was on the right leg.

Now we have to hope that all this positive TRich talk from the Colts coaching staff isn't just hot air. Oh yeah and we haven't played a preseason game yet and we already need Ahmad Bradshaw to stay healthy.

Maybe they will talk to us about a possible trade.

Running backs are a dime a dozen. If there is one position were you can get production from a late round pick or camp body it's HB.

Never underestimate Ryan Grig... oh. Yeah, I'm late to the party, stallyns. Wink

I wouldn't be shocked to see Fozzy Whitaker get a call at least for camp. He was a Chud favorite, it seemed, in Cleveland. And could still push for a spot on the team in the ST department. Free agent wire is a little scarce at the moment, even for RB's: Decrepit Ronnie Brown, Bernard Scott, Felix Jones, Mike Goodson, Michael Bush, Kahlil Bell, Tashard Choice. Maybe they give guys like Ray Graham or Jawann Jamison another shot to make a roster, but both are more zone/one-cut runners, whereas the Colts appear intent on angling for a power-running game.

Edit: Either way, if it were me, I'd get a camp body in there that could/would give my other 2nd/3rd-string players the best chance of developing and showcasing what they have, and keep my eyes glued to the waiver wire come time for final cuts when certain deeper RB teams who aren't likely to stay 4 deep at RB (5 if you count a FB) unless one of those runners is providing one hell of a special teams contribution. Possible waiver casualties could be one of the Jets #3/#4 vets (Bilal Powell, Darryl Richardson - edge to Powell for veteran status and ST contributions), Bengals (Green-Ellis isn't a standout runner, but he's a competent grinder who stays healthy and is battling for a roster spot), and Raiders (if both MJD and DMC make the roster - no reason FTM to believe they won't - Kory Sheets is battling for a RB4 spot).

We had Tashard Choice for coffee and a doughnut towards the end of last year. I think he signed with Pittsburgh after we released him

Nobody can come back 100% from an achilles tear. You hope you can get to 90% or around it and try for the best. But nobody, especially not a RB, is ever the same.

Shame, I really liked Vic Ballard as a player but, his NFL career is probably not much longer, I think he rehabs, tries to come back in 2025, bounces around the league for another year or two and is just done.

Nobody is going to give the guy a shot after an 11 year absence...I don't care how much a decade of rehab does to repair his Achilles, it's just not plausible.
