NFL is suspending Ravens RB Ray Rice for the first two games this season, per sources. The suspension is expected to be announced today.

How can this be reconciled with Roethlisberger's six-game ban in 2010?

This is a joke. As Key said, Big Ben should be pissed. No charges were ever even brought and he was suspended 6 games. Rice physically assaulted the hell out of a woman and it's on camera.

It's not the act of smoking weed dude, it's the REPETITIVE parole violations. That's how the US legal system works, and the NFL follows suit. Guarantee you in the real world that a lone domestic violence case doesn't get as harsh a punishment than breaking parole like 5 times..usually if the partners for press charges there isn't any consequences.

It can't be. This is a joke of a suspension.

Or you know, Pryor getting suspended 5 games for violating an NCAA rule by getting free tattoos.

I mean, at the end of the day, Ray Rice is done anyway, and I'll be glad to see DT's shoving him face first into the dirt at the line of scrimmage all day, but the optics on this are utterly embarrassing to the NFL.

There is no consistency in NFL punishments. It's awful.

If this was 2010 I'm sure Goodell would have thrown the book at him. He was out of control. I think since the new CBA he hasn't been able to get away with those outlandish suspensions.

This is half of what I predicted. 2 games appealed down to 1.

A few things here that just bother me...

#1 - The Ben Roethlisberger situation was more about having a repeated offense coming up against him. Charges or not, it was his second instance of being accused of sexual assault. THAT is why he got 6 games. It wasn't his first rodeo.

#2 - Pryor was given a 5 game suspension instead of being told he couldn't enter the NFL since he did not declare prior to the regular NFL draft. It was either sit out 5 games and be eligible for the 2011 supplemental draft or wait until April 2012. The NFL did him a favor.

#3 - Rice is a first time offender. Was it a bad thing he did? Absolutely. However, what most people either don't understand or choose to ignore, is that his fiancee was also arrested at the same time. All reports seem to show that she instigated the violence and Rice retaliated, whether intentionally or unintentionally. This is where her apology for her actions come into play (which were so widely scrutinized after his press conference). This is not simply a case of Rice deciding to beat his fiancee -- it is a case of mutual domestic violence and again, from all reports, seems to show Rice acting in self defense. Unless there's been video that I haven't seen regarding this (and I remember a report of one from inside the elevator that supposedly the NFL had access to) that shows otherwise, I don't see much of a ground to stand on with some of these accusations being thrown at him, honestly. I don't condone what he did at all -- but there is always context to a situation and this appears to be one that eased his punishment a bit.

This

Lesson learned. If you're ever thinking about doing an illegal substance, just deck your girl to relieve the frustration. The punishment is a lot less severe.

2 games is simply not enough. I don't care if he's a first time offender. He hit his wife. Violence like that should bring at the very least an equal suspension to adderall/pot. Should have been at least 4.
