If we're to go with Justin Durant as a starting weakside linebacker, we best look into safety/linebacker hybrid players to supplant him on third downs.

Time to redeem yourself, Jeff Heath.
ahmad dixon or Jakar Hamilton too

If we have to rely on any of those guys to "redeem" themselves, we'd better gear up for a top 5 draft pick in 2015.

Not any one of them could possibly be as bad as Carter was for stretches in coverage last year.

Looks like McClain, Melton and Carr are all due back this week.

Which is good.

Pablo is not seriously hurt.

Good on all counts.

I was big on claiborne when we drafted him but he has been disappointing when he plays which is not often enough. Looks more and more that trade was a bust.

Don't get me wrong, I still think Claiborne will turn it around and be worth trading up for.

It's just hard to deny that right now Kuechly would be the bigger asset to our defense.

By "sometimes" I assume you mean like 99.9999999999% of the time.

Agreed. The guy has a lot of potential and has shown flashes, he just needs to find a way to stay healthy. I wouldn't be surprised if missed this entire preseason... once again.

Claiborne is a bust. We need to accept that and move on. He's a soft player who has no ball awareness and can't stay healthy. If he misses more time this season, we should cut our losses and be done with him.

So, he has played below expectations as a 6th rd pk as a rookie, he dislocates his shoulder the 1st game of his 2nd season and I'm sure that made him a little soft for the rest of the season n let's just go ahead get rid of him all rdy?????? Can we see how he does his 3rd year ( like we do WR's who usually show something their 3rd year) ?

Yes, it was a bad trade, yes, I know who we could have had had we stayed put, blah blah blah. I'm rooting for the guy to turn it around!

I don't think Plan9 was advocating cutting him - since it would yield no net positive - but more so he doesn't warrant extension. Right now, I agree.

"Cut your losses" could mean decline his 5th year option and bite the cap hit for trading him should some team come calling with a good enough asset.

Actually cutting Claiborne this year or next would make no sense.

So if the Jets, Cards or Jags or some other CB hungry team calls offering a 2nd round pick for him then we don't even consider it?

Right now? We absolutely consider it.
