Another day, another battle, this time for the middle linebacker position.

The Candidates:

Jasper Brinkley - 6th year out of South Carolina

Audie Cole - 3rd year out of North Carolina State

Mike Mauti - 2nd year out of Penn State

Once again, tell us who you got as the starter out of camp and why

This is really a tough thing to decide. Brinkley, it seems would have the upper hand with his starting experience and hitting; however, I'm leaning toward Mauti.

I like Cole, but I think he's just a bit too slow. Mauti is quicker/faster than the other two and he has gained some NFL experience, so he should be ready to compete hard and win the job.

It's possible, the team will carry all three of these guys because if Mauti does win the starting job, he's only one play from retiring due to another ACL.

No Greenway?

I really hope one of the young guys shows enough to either beat Brinkley out at MLB or win the WLB spot and force Greenway inside.

That would mean either Mauti MLB / Greenway WLB or Greenway MLB / Cole WLB (or maybe Hodges). But I'm not convinced the young LBs will pan out to much in the end.

If I'm betting, I'll bet on Brinkley to win the starting MLB job out of camp. He's a veteran who'll minimize mistakes and a downhill thumper who'll keep the run game sound even if he offers nothing in coverage. Barr is enough of a project that I bet experience at the other LB spots will be emphasized.

That would leave Greenway at WLB, and Barr vs Cole at SLB (sometimes both, with Barr at the LOS as a rusher and Cole/Greeway as off-LOS LBs in nickel).

Mauti would stay as the backup MLB and Hodges would have to beat out at least one of Dean and Watts on special teams to avoid getting cut.

If healthy, it's gonna be Mauti. The best talent by far @ MLB on the current roster. And he's the type of player Zimmer likes.

Don't think Greenway will slip inside.

Meh. It's nice to hope, but that's going too far IMO.

I think Brinkley is our MLB.

Im guessing Audie Cole. He is the best coverage MLB of the group and seems to have more potential than Brinkley and Mauti.

He's not anything special, talent-wise.

Without his injury history, it would be Michael Mauti. I cannot see the team being confident with handing Mauti the starting role.

Audie Cole is easily more versatile than Jasper Brinkley. So that should help him but I believe whoever we end up starting will strictly be a 2 down player with emphasis on stopping the run. I see Jasper Brinkley winning the job.

I am more interested in what looks we give in our nickel packages. I expect us to actually play a 4 man rotation at linebacker on game days.

That's actually why I put in the "Other" thinking that someone might consider him at that position. There's other possibilities as well, so I wanted to give people the option, despite the overwhelming likelihood that it will be one of the three mentioned in the poll.

Although I voted Brinkley, I expect 2 to 3 players will serve in some sort of rotation. Thankfully, we have Barr locking down one LB spot for years to come (hopefully), so we won't have to keep devoting draft resources to the LB position (MLB isn't nearly as valued as outside, rush LB).

Can't imagine any scenario outside of an injury where Mauti gets the start over Brinkley or Cole. He still has a lot of catching up to do.

What? You do realise that there were scouts (mel kiper, but also others) that had Mauti as a late first/early second grad based purely on his play? Others at least asma second rounder. Injuries (3 ACL) made him drop.

Talent wise, it's not even close: Mauti is the best of the lot.

So you will just take their word for it? They (ESPN) are some of the least reliable in the business, especially in the pre-season, which is when they were hyping Mauti mostly due to him being PSU's defensive captain/leading tackler. Examples from last year: Stephen Morris, Tajh Boyd, Anthony Johnson, and Adrian Hubbard were all top 25 players before the season started. ESPN's scouting department is full of garbage with only occasional useful bits.

Also, draft position =/= talent. Even when healthy, Mauti wasn't special athletically. His game is based on being a strong technician with good instincts and always giving 100% effort.
