If anyone seems to love playing for the niners, it's Joe. Glad he extended his contract for two more years. Maybe this is a move that will free up some cap this year or next in preparation for re-signing Crabtree.

Staley was seeking a new contract from the 49ers, but went about it in a different fashion than tight end Vernon Davis and right guard Alex Boone. Rather than sit out the offseason program and mandatory minicamp, he did not miss any of the team’s offseason activities.

That kinda sends a VERY clear message to the others.

I couldn't agree more. That is a crystal clear message. This front office is very smart.

When he retires, the organization has to keep him around. Coach, front office, PA announcer, anything. I don't think there's a player that personifies this team better than him. Blue collar, hard worker, with unusually high athleticism for his position. That's what this team is built on.

Oh no, no 'kinda'. This message is loud and clear. Show up to work and you'll get what you deserve. I love this

Yep, this was definitely a message to VD and Boone. Good, as it should be.

Staley just made my new jersey selection for me... Joe Staley you will be the first jersey I buy that belongs to a Lineman.

I wonder if Baalke, at one point, was wondering: "Hmm... who has 4 years left on his contract, that I could give an extension just to show them who's boss... Hey Joe! Want two more years?!"

Well, Staley apparently asked for a new deal since he was set to make only about 3.4 million. I'm starting to think we will bring Crabtree back next year, what do you think?

That's what I mentioned a few posts up. Making a deal with a veteran with many years left on his deal, that's usually a prelude to another contract.

From Albert Breer:

Quote:
2-year extension on 49ers LT Joe Staley's deal adds $12M to existing 4 years. $6M bonus added in '15, $4M bonus in '16, $2M raise in '17.

Rudy or Y2, how does this impact our cap space next year?

And sorry, I did miss your post about Crabtree.

From Ian Rapoport:

Quote:
Got details of #49ers T Joe Staley’s complex extension: Adds 2 option years for a total of $18.8M. Can be worth $23.2M if he hits incentives

I am not a cap expert at all, but from what you just quoted, I would think adding $6 million against the cap next year cannot be a great thing. Especially since before the extension our top 51 salaries is already about 3 million over a projected cap of 140 million. Which of course doesn't include resigning anyone.

Don't know if anyone could be restructured, but possible casualties that would save worthwhile money would be Stevie Johnson (6 mil), Brooks (5.3 mil), J. Smith (4.2 mil), RayMac (3.4 mil), or Dawson (3.1 mil). Only Johnson wouldn't have dead money involved - the others would still carry cap hits of over $2 mil, but that's the only way to free up space from cuts without getting crazy (Willis would save 7.8 mil, Vernon 4.9 mil). A few others like Dahl, Martin, Boone, and Ian Williams would save small amounts.

My guess is Willis might see an extension/restructuring that could probably cut his 7.8 mil in half or better. If Stevie Johnson is a worthwhile addition, his 6 mil can be possibly cut in half with an extension/restructuring as well. But if we're keeping Crabtree and fitting another 6 mil in there for Staley, something big has to change. Unless our front office knows something about the NFL Cap that I don't (which of course they obviously know many things about the cap that I don't, quite frankly).

But again - I'm far from an expert on the matter. I could be entirely wrong.
