We've still got a week before players report to Mankato, so let's examine some of the various positions where there are expected to be significant battles for the starting spot. Let's start with the Left Offensive Guard Position.

The Candidates:

Charlie Johnson - 8th year out of Oklahoma State

David Yankey - Rookie out of Stanford

Jeff Baca - 2nd year out of UCLA

Vladimir Ducasse - 5th year out of UMass

So, let's hear it...who do you think will win the starting spot out of camp and why.

I think Charlie Johnson wins it. Continuity on the offensive line is extremely important and Johnson hasn't been completely abysmal.

It will be a very interesting competition though. I would not be surprised at all if Baca or Yankey wins it either.

I hope the best man wins. I just hope that the best man isn't Charlie Johnson because that will mean we have a bunch of scrubs at that position and there won't be any room for improvement over what we had last year.

Could we possibly see a Geoff Schwartz/Brandon Fusco scenario again? I hope Yankey shows enough to win the position. That's a real young and solid line moving forward.

im a big yankey fan i was very high on him in the draft and when we got him in the 5th i was beyond shocked i really hope he wins the spot. He is very smart and was in a pro style blocking system at stanford where one year he was an all-american left tackle, then the next year an all-american guard, not too many people can say that

I don't think its as big of a competition as fans want to believe. Yankey will get the job...eventually. Johnson will be the guy in 2014.

It's gonna be Johnson, because unfortunately he's the most ready/prepared and perhaps the best of the bunch. LG will be a need going forward, will most likely address via Day 1/Day 2 of the draft next year IMO.

I think Charlie gets the starting job for now.
Think Yanky get its later.
Hope Yanky can get it from the start tho (assuming he is the better LG to start the season)

I want the best guy we have protecting Teddy/Cassels from day 1

Johnson gets the job. I think Yankey is physically a year away from contributing. Baca is not starting material yet but I said the same about Fusco. Ducasse just isn't good but we've seen obscure players develop into decent starters after a change of scenery. My money is on Johnson, unless Ducasse tears up camp.

Ready? Probably. Prepared? Aren't they all learning a new playbook therefore on "level ground" in that regard?

While I certainly would prefer someone else, I too believe Johnson will start the season at LG. Yankey missed all the OTAs, so really how can we expect him to be anywhere near up to speed enough to overtake Charlie?

Oline concepts can't be all that different unless you're going from man blocking to zone. The terminology may be slightly different, but Johnson had a considerable advantage given his experience in the league and playing on multiple schemes.
