I don't think Franco and Webster were even the best at their position. At best it is a toss up with those two and one of their peers.

For best of all time I am going to have to go with:
Joe Greene
Jack Lambert
Mel Blount
Rod Woodson
Troy P.

Try throwing on that secondary.

Mike Webster was the best Center in the NFL for a long time. Count the pro bowls. He set the bar for the Steelers and has the record for most games played as a Steeler.. Franco the best big game back the Steelers has ever had hands down. Before Franco who were the Steelers?. I seen alot of games in the 70s. The Steelers were a running trapping team early on and alot of times they feature Franco and he delivered.

I like that top list, but I would sub out for Bradshaw for Ben...my favorites, however:

1. Hines Ward
2. Troy P.
3. Lynn Swann
4. Big Ben
5. Jerome Bettis

And I'll agree with your HM in Antonio Brown.

good way to separate the top and favorite, not sure what the original poster wanted with this, but you addressed both possibilities. Problem with both? How do we only pick 5 if we are old?

Sadly, that's my problem too. Grew up in Pittsburgh in the 1970's. But I'll give it a shot. With so many choices, I think one could make a case for around 15 different players to be top 5. Mine would be....

1) Joe Greene
2) Jack Lambert
3) Mel Blount
4) Rod Woodson
5) Jack Ham

I consider all of these players to be top 5 at their positions all-time. Only way I could narrow it down. But there's really no wrong answers.

It's very tough to narrow it down to the top five. I can't say there would be many wrong choices. I agree that the consensus #1 Steeler of all-time should be Mean Joe Greene.

I'm a bit of a young one, I haven't seen much tape on the 70s, 80s, and early 90s to really voice a opinion. So I have to go from late 90s and beyond.

1. Jerome Bettis

2. Troy

3. Ben

4. Smith

5. Hampton

HM: farrior, Harrison, porter(no order)

I know Hampton didn't produce numbers but man he was a great clogger. Not only did he free up our linebackers, but I think you could give him some credit for a.smith, Kiesel success. We also seem to miss him pretty badly this year.

There's no rule stating you can't make more than one list...I promise; I won't call the forum police and have your FF membership card revoked! Wink

Heck, make a top 5 "from the 70s" list. Then make a top 5 from the modern era list. Then combine/order those two lists into a top 10...then cut the bottom 5 out, and voila! Kind of what I did, though not that methodically...

I'm "old" in comparison to most (not all, however, thank goodness!) on this forum (43). But honestly...recent memory is more powerful than long-term, so I appreciate the more recent accomplishments a bit more. Wrong as it may be...it's the truth, so that's why I only have one "legacy" player on my favorite top 5.

Or, as this YOUR list, I could just make your favorite list for you! Laughing

1. Dermontti Dawson, OC
2. Mike Webster, OC
3. Alan Faneca, OG
4. Tunch Ilkin, OT
5. Jeff Hartings, OC

Since the 2000s are when I actually watched and really understood everything, Ill go a bit more in depth...

Bettis' best years came in the 90s. For most of the 2000s, he was average at best.

If we are talking about level of play for 2000s players...

1. Polamalu
2. Aaron Smith
3. Harrison
4. Faneca
5. Ben

If we are talking about overall impact...

1. Ben
2. Polamalu
3. Aaron Smith
4. James Harrison
5. James Farrior

My Top 10 Favorite Steelers of All Time
1. Troy Polamalu
2. Rod Woodson
3. Hines Ward
4. James Harrison
5. Mean Joe
6. Jerome Bettis
7. Dermotti Dawson
8. Jack Lambert
9. Greg Lloyd
10. Carnell Lake
