To me, that phrase is more likely to mean he's "too smart" than anything.

I'd dump Ponder, I just dont see the point in keeping him. He doesnt do much in practice and you can find a developmental QB off the street to put on the practice squad for having an extra arm during the week.

It's likely not going to happen. Over $3M is a lot to pay a guy to walk out the door.

I think the flanker is Z not Y.

Don't think they'll keep both Mauti and Dean over Watts, who's been ahead of them both.

I don't think Simpson takes up a roster spot while suspended.

Here's my guess:

WX: Cordarrelle Patterson | Rodney Smith (until Simpson returns and forces him or Thielen to the PS)
LT: Matt Kalil | Tiny Richardson
LG: Charlie Johnson | David Yankey
OC: John Sullivan | Joe Berger
RG: Brandon Fusco | Vlad Ducasse
RT: Phil Loadholt
TE: Kyle Rudolph | Rhett Ellison | Chase Ford
WZ: Greg Jennings | Jarius Wright | Adam Thielen
QB: Matt Cassel | Teddy Bridgewater | Christian Ponder
FB: Jerome Felton
RB: Adrian Peterson | Matt Asiata | Jerick McKinnon

RE: Everson Griffen | Scott Crichton
3T: Sharrif Floyd | Shamar Stephen (with Wootton, Robison and others playing DT in rotation)
1T: Linval Joseph | Fred Evans
LE: Brian Robison | Corey Wootton
WB: Chad Greenway | Brandon Watts | Mike Mauti
MB: Audie Cole | Jasper Brinkley
SB: Anthony Barr | Gerald Hodges
RC: Xavier Rhodes | Derek Cox | Jabari Price
FS: Harrison Smith | Andrew Sendejo
SS: Robert Blanton | Chris Crocker | Kurt Coleman
LC: Captain Munnerlyn | Josh Robinson | Marcus Sherels

K: Blair Walsh
P: Jeff Locke
S: Cullen Loeffler

Think Exum might stick instead of Coleman since I'm not sure they could get him to the PS.

I did forget about Simpson's suspension, so Smith likely makes the opening day roster.

I swore I typed Z as you are correct. Y is a tight end designation more often than not.

Watts is injured at the moment, and, in my opinion, is only ahead of Mauti at the WLB spot because Mauti was a late add to that spot.

He was playing MLB and SLB prior to the first depth chart coming out. He only played six plays against the Cardinals, but after a solid week of practice, and more playing time tonight, I think he takes the spot and doesn't look back.

Watts is a developmental type guy that I feel would be better on the PS, but perhaps they keep him over Dean. I would have absolutely no problem with that; I hate giving roster spots to pure special teams players.

Good point about Watts' injury. Hope Mauti does well at WLB, should do a good job downhill in run defense at least. Mauti and Hodges are already good enough on ST that they could probably do without Dean. Think they might not want to risk Watts and Exum on the PS after what happened last year with Dawkins and Bond.

...

Dawkins is with the Giants this year, hasn't done much in preseason.

Bond is playing 2nd team RG for the Rams, had a monster game in run blocking against the Packers last week.

Very true. I think, in the end, that Mauti's versatility will be too enticing for Zimmer to pass up. He's played every LB spot on the defense through mini-camp and training camp.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the veteran safety additions. I do think that Zimmer's plan all along was to add Crocker unless someone absolutely took control of the strong safety spot.

I would love for Blanton to be that guy, but he has to stay healthy himself.

Bubble guys, roster battles:

-- Mauti did nothing impressive but didn't hurt himself either
-- Brinkley was better than Cole
-- Sherels wasn't great but Robinson did himself no favors
-- Prater really should make the team
-- Cox seemed to do well
-- hard to tell what the safeties did
-- Fred Evans was great, Stephen was solid, Johnson did very little except the sack
-- Trattou is playing well, Crichton has done nothing
-- Wentworth played RT and LT ahead of Richardson (with Remmers at RT when he moved to the left), did OK in run blocking but cost them the safety
-- Ducasse got blown up at least once on a run play
-- All the RBs looked good
-- Reisner is the best TE after Rudolph, ahead of Higgins and others on the depth chart

http://www.dailynorseman.com/2014/8/24/6062357/minnesota-vikings-roster-cuts-2014-first-wave

Roster cut down to 75 happens this week. Someone at DN forecasts these cuts:

S Branden Bishop
T Pierce Burton
WR Andy Cruse
WR Donte Foster
TE Mike Higgins
LB Justin Jackson
WR Kamar Jorden
C Zac Kerin
WR Erik Lora
CB Julian Posey
DT Kheeston Randall
DE Tyler Scott
DE Jake Snyder
OT Austin Wentworth
RB Dominique Williams

Disagree with Wentworth (who seems to be the 3rd OT on the depth chart), Dom Williams, and Kerin (they'll need a 3rd OC for the preseason game, Sullivan won't play).
