Going to be a hot topic with so many good players. My very early guess at a opening day 53....italicized is FA/Trade, Bold is rookie

QB- Colin Kaepernick, Blaine Gabbert
RB/FB- Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter, Marcus Lattimore, Carlos Hyde, Bruce Miller
TE- Vernon Davis, Vance McDonald, Garrett Celek
WR- Anquan Boldin, Michael Crabtree, Stevie Johnson, Bruce Ellington, Quinton Patton, Kassim Osgood
OL- Joe Staley, Mike Iupati, Daniel Kilgore, Alex Boone, Anthony Davis, Jonathan Martin, Marcus Martin, Joe Looney, Luke Marqaurdt

DL- Justin Smith, Ian Williams, Ray McDonald, Glenn Dorsey, Tank Carradine, Quinton Dial, Tony Jerrod-Eddie
ILB- Patrick Willis, Chris Borland, Nick Moody, Michael Wilhoite
OLB- Ahmad Brooks, Corey Lemonier, Dan Skuta, Aaron Lynch
CB- Tramaine Brock, Chris Culliver, Jimmie Ward (also a S) Dontae Johnson (also a S?), Eric Wright, Perrish Cox
S- Eric Reid, Antoine Bethea, Craig Dahl, CJ Spillman

K- Phil Dawson
P- Andy Lee
LS- Kevin McDermott
KR/PR- Bruce Ellington, Kendall Hunter (KR), Perrish Cox (PR)- backups

IR/PUP/Suspended- Navarro Bowman, Aldon Smith (expected, not confirmed), Keith Reaser, Brendan Thomas

Notable cuts- LaMichael James, Brandon Lloyd, Adam Snyder, Demarcus Dobbs, Kenneth Acker, Caleb Ramsay, Trey Millard- last 3 guys could go on the PS

Any initial thoughts?

I think our roster is pretty stacked....issue #1 for me is QB depth. issue #2- i love Gore, but i think his price of 6.5 million is too high...and it may be time to pass the torch onto Lattimore/Hyde.

I think Millard can be placed on PUP as well.

Acker to PS, Okoye to PS, Marquardt on PS

agreed. were going to try to stash as many guys there as possible

wont i dont quite understand is, when were going to draft somebody why not ask maybe during interviews or during a phone call "how would you potentially feel about not playing this season and maybe being on the pup"

tons of teams put guys there with fake injuries to stash them. we are targeting injured guys intentionally so we can stash them. but are we taking those guys who may not be rated as highly as others but those others wouldnt make the roster so they got for the injured guy a little farther down. bc we know can stash them for next year (not positive this happens. but i think it does. and it does make sense to)

The more the better on PUP. Don't have to expose him to waivers.

BTW. I totally forgot about Bubba Ventrone. I don't know it'll shake up in reality. But i would replace either Marquardt and put him on the PS, or Dahl, for Ventrone.

qb/2 - Kaepernick, Gabbert
rb/6 - Gore, Hunter, Hyde/R, Lattimore
fb/7 - Miller
wr/13 - Crabtree, Johnson, Boldin, Patton, Ellington/R, Osgood
te/15 - Davis, McDonald
c/17 - Martin/R, Kilgore
og/20 - Iupati, Boone, Snyder
ot/23 - Staley, Davis, Martin

de/28 - Smith, McDonald, Dobbs, Jerod-Eddie, Carradine
dt/31 - Dorsey, Williams, Dial
olb/36 - Smith, Brooks, Skuta, Lemonier, Lynch/R
ilb/40 - Willis, Borland/R, Wilhoite, Moody
cb/45 - Brock, Culliver, Ward/R, Cox, Morris
fs/48 - Reid, Spillman, Johnson/R
ss/50 - Bethea, Dahl

k/51 - Dawson
p/52 - Lee
ls/53 - McDermott

pup/ir - Bowman, Thomas/R, Reaser/R

notes - The last few picks will be on the ps. Really hoping Ward wins the SS job from Bethea. Cox makes the 53 because he can cover the slot, play on st and is easily better than Cook/Wright. Dobbs isnt going anywhere nor should he. Didnt suspend Aldon as its not official yet. With the addition of Stevie and Vance a better blocker than receiver, i didnt add a third te. OL wise, if any injuries happen, i prefer Snyder over Looney who's barely played and barring a good tc and preseason, he's gone. Gore shouldnt go anywhere. I would ask him to take a pay cut to $5m guaranteed. He gets guaranteed cash and we add $1.45m in cap room. In no way, shape or form should Gore not be a 49er in 2014. I wouldnt feel comfortable at all with Hunter and two unproven rookies especially in pass protection. Dahl makes the 53 because he took a pay cut and is excellent on special teams.

I'd take Ventrone over Dahl.

And you don't think we do this? Okoye's injury last year was not serious enough for him too be put on IR. I remember right after the game, he said he was fine and he'd be ready next week. Then a couple of days later, he was place on IR. Look at the players we drafted who are coming off ACL surgery. This what we do...have been doing. The problem is, and I've been saying this for the longest, the NFL needs to expand the roster to 60 players. The game is faster now and despite the rule changes, just as violent as ever. EVERY team needs more bodies at their disposal. But the owners don't want to be on the hook for more player's salaries and that's really the bottom line.

I could have sworn Ventrone only signed a one-year deal last year...

i was referring to players drafted specifically.

also i think we cut okoye. and put him on the ps before putting him on ir. he either wasnt claimed or chose to stay

When everyones back and healthy I expect our depth chart to look like this:

QB: Kaepernick, Gabbert

RB: Gore, Lattimore, Hyde, Hunter
FB: Miller
WR: Crabtree, Boldin, Johnson, Patton, Ellington
TE: Davis, McDonald, Celek

T: Staley, Davis, J. Martin, Snyder
G: Iupati, Boone, Thomas
C: M. Martin, Kilgore

DE: J. Smith, Carradine, McDonald
NT: Dorsey, Williams, Dial

OLB: A. Smith, Brooks, Lemonier, Lynch, Skuta, Moody
ILB: Willis, Bowman, Borland, Skov, Wilhoite

CB: Culliver, Brock, Cook, Cox, Reaser, Morris
S: Reid, Bethea, Ward, Johnson

K: Dawson
P: Lee

(NCB: Ward)
(LS: Snyder)
(KR/PR: Ellington, Patton, Hunter)

Alot of LBs, but our LB corps will be diminished a little for some time with Aldon and Bowman out. In this time, I expect Borland and Lemonier to be the breakout stars, with Lynch and Skov also doing great, and Skuta and Wilhoite have always been solid backups. Plus guys like Moody, Skuta, Wilhoite, Skov, etc can also heavily contribute on Special Teams. And if Lynch packed on a little weight he could also play DE.

G: Iupati, Boone, Thomas
C: M. Martin, Kilgore

DE: J. Smith, Carradine, McDonald I don't really like the idea of having a single backup DE, I think Dobbs/TJE (maybe even both) will make the roster.
NT: Dorsey, Williams, Dial

OLB: A. Smith, Brooks, Lemonier, Lynch, Skuta, Moody
ILB: Willis, Bowman, Borland, Skov, Wilhoite

We keep saying that year after year, yet we never cut him.
