So, I was way off on the kind of player he is. I initially thought of him as a huge space eater and a guy that would engage and push back blockers and create lanes for our LBs to break up plays. Basically what Ngata does and what I see BW doing.

He's not that at all. He's not that big and his best trait seems to be how he sheds blockers, not drive them back. He'a going to make plays/tackles for himself, not free up others to do so. He's definitely a 4-3 DT.

I don't buy that we're going full time 3-4 though. As obviously as he is a 4-3 player, Brent Urban is definitely a 3-4 guy. It's going to be a split.

I mean just looking at our roster we've got 3 4-3 DT's in Ngata, Canty, and now Jernigan.

We've got 2 3-4 NT's with Williams and Cody

We've got a bunch of IDK's like KLM/Tyson/Urban and McPhee, who could either play 3-4 DT or 4-3 DE.

Then you go to our linebackers and we've got Suggs/Dumervil who are 3-4 OLB's and 4-3 DE's. You've got Upshaw who's a 4-3 SLB. You've got Mosley/Brown who are 4-3 WLB or 3-4 WLB and then you've got Daryl Smith who's a 3-4 MLB or 4-3 SLB.

So. Many. Options.

We could also do this:

Ngata/Jernigan/Williams

That's by far the most likely outcome.

Yeah, as far as 3-down looks go, along our defensive line, that should be the plan.

I don't see Canty losing his starting spot.

Probably not this season, but going forward I doubt he's in their long-term plans.

As long as he's healthy, I don't either.

I would prefer Ngata/Williams/Canty TBH.

That's what I think the starting line will look like this season with Tyson as the first rotational guy off the bench. Given Jernigan's experience at Florida State he might carve out a decent role right away though. Probably more as someone who eats into Cody's snaps than anything else.

It would be really nice to see the team finally subbing out defensive linemen on a consistent basis instead of keeping the starters in there for the vast majority of snaps while letting the quality depth rot on the bench.

I see Jernigan as the first guy off the bench mixed with Tyson. Ngata and Canty's snap counts will both be monitored, so we need two guys ready to go.

As for Cody's snap count, that's where Williams comes in. Keep Cody off the field as much as possible, but playing nickel solves that.

Yeah, I had just edited in something relating to that in my previous post. I would be all for reducing the snaps for Ngata and Canty. Not because I don't think they're worth playing, but because it would definitely help keep them fresh and probably healthy. Getting a real rotation along the defensive line has been a pet peeve of mine for a while.

It's also something Spagnuolo mastered at New York with the Giants, so there's that.

Wait, didn't Timmy Jernigan play 3-4 NT with the Seminoles last year? Confused

Good pick, though and even greater value.

Mostly, and that's probably where he'll play with Baltimore too.

Probably, though it'll be weird seeing him at NT and BW playing DE unless they delegate him as the backup NT.
