http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/05/06/charles-godfrey-takes-a-big-pay-cut-to-stay-with-panthers/

Quote:
The latest is safety Charles Godfrey. According to Field Yates of ESPN.com, Godfrey has taken a massive pay cut, dropping his base salary from $5 million to $750,000. He can still make $1.7 million of it back in per-game bonuses.

The deal was a no-brainer on several levels, primarily because Godfrey has no leverage after tearing his Achilles last year and then watching the team bring in Thomas DeCoud and Roman Harper.

Like running backs DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, Godfrey chose to stay for less, and his decision created around $4 million worth of cap space for the Panthers, which they needed.

Great news he would been cut otherwise

He saw the writing on the wall, knew he was going to have to take a pay cut either way; figured he better stay with the defense he knows and prove himself.

Yeah, great news on all fronts. I wonder what this means as far as Hardy and Cam. With the pay advance, my gut is telling me that they're going to lock down Hardy soon.

Great news, this gives us added depth at CB as well, since Godfrey play some there in college.

People forget just how good he was before he got injured. I could see him being a CB for us, but don't count him out at Safety either!

I'm happy Godfrey took the paycut because I didn't want to see him go. He was great pre injury

I am very happy with this. I dont want Roman Harper to see the field. Decoud and Lester and Godfrey is a good trio, Harper has experience but he is a former Saint and a jerk and I cant get passed it.

Might be a clearing out specifically for the purpose of extending Cam.

I heard Gettlemen stuck his head in a vice and turned it until Godfrey accepted the pay cut. Anthony Spilotro like. Or else Charles Godfrey was sleeping with the fishies. For all those who don't know who Anthony Spilotro is, Joe Pesci played him in the movie Casino. Big chicago mobster back in the 70-90's who ran Vegas and stuck an irish mobsters head in a vice as part of torturing him to get info on his friend who stole from the Chicago Outfit.

With Gettlemen's east coast accent I think "The Godfather" is a great nickname for him going forward.

Anyone think Asante Samuel would be a good one year deal at this point? With our front 7 he could be much better then he was at Atlanta
