I think you and I are splitting hairs. I'm not saying he is good, but he was clearly our best LB on the bench if one of our starting 3 got hurt, so his spot was pretty much guaranteed going into next year imo

Yeah, pretty much.

If we somehow manage to get an upgraded starter at OLB in the draft though, that'll push other guys down a bit and we'll still have decent guys on the bench. For less money. Not that cap savings really matters for us right now, but *shrug*, if he wasn't going to play much anyway and isn't healthy it's not exactly money well spent.

Not saying Allen was terrible or anything, just...replaceable.

I wonder if a guy like Shazier could be an option if he either fell or we ended up with some extra picks in weird places.

Allen was pretty good for us, and it won't be so simple to reproduce his production. I have to imagine this was health-related.

I would imagine he's a possibility, but you have to remember I think Watson likely is the guy to fill in for Allen's spot. I get the feeling we're pretty high on him.

I liked Allen, but i'm sort of happy we're going in a different direction starting wise. Solid backup, but I never liked him as the starter.

Fair enough, I think he could be replaced with a 3rd or 4th round pick, but not really a necessary move

To be honest, I was never a big Russell Allen fan. He was reliable when someone went down, or to fill a void through his seasons, but he never made any splash plays or did anything to put him on the next level. Just average on his best day.

Good luck to his career and life.

He didnt make the splash plays the INTs, FF, FR, sacks, but he ended plays. He did what he was supposed to do and he knew his role on the team as the 4th LB in our defense. I think his value to the team was high enough to consider him a lock to be on the 53 next year imo before we brought in the new FA that slips my mind. The fact that he could come in, in a pinch and the defense wouldnt lose much at all is a big deal to me

It just came out that Russell Allen had a stroke during the game week 15. He's going to retire.

He could have died on the field..

Wow that is truly crazy. Can't believe he was able to go out and finish the game without having more damage. Glad he's recovering as much as possible though.

Wow. I assumed he'd been cut due to concussion recovery...

He's still such a young man. Hopefully he has a presence around the franchise moving forward.

Dave told him that if he wanted to come back he'd always be welcome, so that's nice. But he has 2 young kids and lives/grew up on the west coast and wants to be involved in high school coaching for a bit apparently, so I doubt we see him back in the immediate future. What an awful situation though.
