Busy offseason rolls on. #Bears have agreed to terms on free agent C Brian de la Puente, per NFL source. Expected to back up Roberto Garza.

Quote:
The one-year contract is for the minimum-salary benefit with a $65,000 signing bonus (the maximum for an MSB deal) and $100,000 in base salary guaranteed. That deal makes it clear Garza, who signed for $1.5 million, will remain the starter for this season and reflects Garza’s standing as the leader in the offensive line meeting room. The team has explained to Garza that his role remains unchanged and that the plan is for de la Puente to be a reserve this season.

McClellin is simply not very good. He is not big enough or strong enough to play at the NFL level. The Bears should move on.

de la Puente: "I am very thankful for the opportunity I got in New Orleans. They were going in a different direction and the opportunity presented itself to get back with Coach Kromer and be with a good football team."

Wow that's unexpected. Interesting because some had us signing him instead of garza. Wonder what the contract looks like.

One year deal, can't be too much money.

Shefter says it is a one year deal. I'm guessing it is for the minimum. That means as long as we can agree with him next offseason that we do not need to rush out and grab a center this year. Between him, Boggs and other possibilities we have on the team we are in pretty good shape there, for once.

So basically they are doing a Slauson type plan with him, but red shirting him this season?

The Tribune's free agency tracker says it is on a minimum deal:

Quote:
The Saints were willing to part with de la Puente, and the open market produced only a one-year minimum contract for him

He'll immediately become a candidate to be Garza's successor now then, obviously Kromer has worked with him in New Orleans so knows him well. Would not be surprised at all if he is our starting center heading in to 2015.

We went from having no options, whatsoever, to having great flexibility on that O-line.

I'll take it!

Yeah, this isn't good news for Boggs

If you remember, De La Puente was given the starting job over Olin Kreutz in NO, which prompted him to retire.

He is an excellent center and to get him for one year at the league minimum speaks volumes for his relationship with Aaron Kromer, as well as his fit with the powers that be.

Very nice pick up…I had him coming in to replace Garza this year…now having both on the roster really provides us with options and leads to an intriguing competition at the centre spot.
