Rich Campbell ‏@Rich_Campbell 4m
Bears S Chris Conte had shoulder surgery at the end of March, and his recovery will require 4-5 months, the team announced

He wont be back until some time after training camp starts too. We basically have nobody at free safety right now.

I'm waiting for an explanation as to why he waited to have surgery until late March.

Makes me wonder if this were planned somehow to get an extra roster spot by putting conte on the pup list to start the year

Trying to repress that memory. It hurts a guy trying fight to keep his job to delay the surgery to where the rehab extends into TC though. Presumably there was a medical reason of some kind.

My guess is that we will grab on of the top 3-4 safeties in the draft, they will start with Mundy and we will never hear from Chris Conte again.

He needed a great offseason to keep his job and that is not going to happen now.

Maybe he tried rehabbing it but it didn't work so he decided to have surgery.

I'm the only one pulling for Conte I guess.

I'm pulling for Conte, heck I'm pulling for Shea to break out. But I am... pessimistic about how I expect them to play. haven't seen enough positive points to overcome some of their massive failures, last year in particular. But seeing them prove me wrong in the most spectacular fashion would definitely make me happy.

Its hard for ppl to look past last years D. Conte was never a world beater at S but he was ok before last year. He is still young and I want to see what he can do with the revamp D-line. I know he will never be a pro bowler but he is not as bad a Major thats for sure. In the end he will be a good rotational guy on the back end. I just think he is getting way to much blame for the front 7 last year. But this surgery is a huge set back for him for sure.

I'm pulling for him too. I actually feel really sorry for him because last season clearly effected him a lot and he's completely bereft of confidence, it's not nice seeing a player like that. I always pull for our players and I thought get him behind a good front seven again and Conte could be solid as he actually showed promise in 2012, although this operation could hurt his career a lot, I don't think anyone would be surprised now if he got cut and never gets signed by another team. McClellin on the other hand has never shown promise, I'm still hoping he can turn it around but I just can't see it.
