If we make a trade today for a 30+ old rental I swear I might have to scream. I'd rather see us keep our prospects than give them up for a stop-gap like Byrd or something like that.

It doesn't shock me that the A's landed Lester, in fact the Redsox gave up quite a bit for a solid bat that included Lester.

The Pirates are a tough team to cheer for...let's be honest..we don't exactly know why we do it, we just always have lol..

I'd like to see them go out and get someone who they can keep around for a while, I just don't know how that would be. There was talk about going out and getting Rockies Closing Pitcher LaTroy Hawkins who I think would help because you could move Melancon back to Set up. As solid as Mercer does at times, he is a very replaceable bat..I would mind seeing us upgrade in the batting order. More so at 1st base than anywhere else.

Gaby Sanchez was a good acquisition at the time but now...it's not amounting to much. Ike Davis & Gaby Sanchez are combining for barely above average. One of the biggest issues with our roster is that it's old aging in some areas and that "age" isn't that talented. Much of the time a player gets better with age, the guys we got are getting worse.

It's simple really! The Pirates are never going to be like the Yankees or Red Sox or Cardinals! They will never spend the money they do or make the big-time moves that they do.

We have a great farm system and it is helping us become and hopefully stay respectable.

But fans under the disillusion that we will become a top 5 team with World Series chances every year are seriously kidding themsleves and it's that attitude that adds to fans frustrations.

I'd be alright with A World Series win. Heck, a consistency of making the playoffs would be great. I agree we won't and shouldn't spend money like the best teams in the league do. That doesn't mean we can't be good.

apparently Hawkins is off the market. Rockies don't want to move him.

Players to look out for are Lackey and Ian Kennedy

Well that sucks. Also, Lackey was just traded to the Cardinals so now they've acquired Masterson and Lackey.

Ian Kennedy would be a good addition because we'd have him for the entire next season as well.

What are the chances we are the team that is very close to completing a deal with the Rays for David Price?

I'm reading the Tigers are the front runners. This is annoying me that we haven't made any moves.

Apparently they were in on Andrew Miller too who just went to the O's.

Apparently Price is involved in a 3 team deal, most likely Tigers and Mariners.

I honestly don't think you're going to see us make a single trade. If that's the case, this division is locked up IMO and the Cardinals are going to be the winners. We can't match up offensively to Masterson, Lackey, Wainwright, & Wacha's pitching and we certainly won't out pitch that

We don't need to spend like the Cardinals, that doesn't mean we can't compete with them and sitting back with a bunch of guys that are years away and doing nothing to improve isn't going to allow that to happen. Get ready for a late season landslide

No but it would help and help us continue to compete along with what we have in the farm system.

Did you see what little the Rays got back for him? There's no doubt that Nutting didn't want his contract because the Pirates could have easily have offered a better package. But hey NH said he was "very aggressive" in trade talks so that makes me feel better. Rolling Eyes Meanwhile the Cards and Brewers each were active. They couldn't even improve a bench that has bums like Martinez and Morel on it.

So I guess we'll wait and see what moves they will make now. They did pick up Morneau and Byrd after the non-waiver trade deadline last year. Of course they didn't do that beforehand because Nutting didn't want to pay them an extra month's worth of salary. I absolutely loathe Nutting. Evil or Very Mad

Last year was a blast to watch and I hope they will still be in the hunt in the final two months.

Problem is giving up prospects for rentals only hurts us imo

So, I'm sure this will go over like a lead balloon, but as I am one of those "outsider" Steeler fans, I don't root for all Pittsburgh teams. I do like the Panthers and Pens, but I only "glancingly" follow the Pirates. I am an O's fan, but of course, can't stand the Ravens, so don't EVEN go there.

Anyway, the Pirates are smarter by developing their prospects, and should pay off in the next year or two. Where as the Os just traded their 21 year old, SP, #3 prospect (ERod) for a two month rental. Miller has already made intimations that he'd like to re-sign with the Sox at year's end.

The Os are not likely to get past the Tigers or As this year, and while now our middle reliever rotation is, as they say, "filthy", it still isn't going to get them past those two teams this year, IMO. And while ERod hasn't performed well this year in AA, he's still only 21. So basically, we gave up our 3rd best pitching prospect for a guy that may get 20-25 innings of work and not likely get us into the WS.

So, from an outsiders perspective, you all probably made the right choice by not trading the "farm"...
