Whether or not he deserves it remains to be seen. You don't get paid for what you have done but what you will do.

Vince Wilfork's new deal with Patriots really is a one-year, $8M deal that includes $3M guaranteed and deal has an option for 2 more years.

Wilfork played for well below market value for a number of years.

I doubt he plays out the entire deal, though, barring a legit return to form.

That's irrelevant you pay for what they can do for you during the contract not what they did.

I'm more interested to see much cap space this frees up at the moment...

The only thing that matters is the cap number, because they assuredly kicked the can down the road.

This.

He deserves nothing more than to be evaluated on and compensated for the projection of how he will perform going forward.

The Lakers totally disagree with you and think this is ludicrous.

I mean they got him for a one year deal with options going forward. What more could you ask for? He'll play next year and if he plays badly we can cut him loose. There's only 3 million guaranteed. This is a pretty nice contract especially because it contains the option to keep him for an extra year or two if he actually plays well.

Does anyone recall the Ty Law situation in the '04 offseason? I don't recall the details, but what I do remember seems to have been fairly similar to what we saw with Wilfork.

Unfortunately Law got hurt midway through the '04 season and ended up being released the following year.

Hard to track down the details. All I know is that he was super pissed at the Pats FO for offering him 6.25 per year when he was looking for around 9. Said things along the lines of not wanting to ever be in a Patriots uniform again. When he said that he was still under contract for two more year in '04, got hurt, was subsequently released.

Wilfork seems like a different story. He just tweeted that his goal is to retire a Patriot.

I really don't see any downside to this contract at all. Worst case scenario is Vince gets hurt or sucks and we lose 3 million in the first year with no further strings attached. Best case scenario is Vince is motivated to earn the extension, stays healthy, and returns to one of the better DTs in the game. Most likely scenario is Vince plays average and gets released after next season.

Really no downside
