from what I could tell, he's basically a replacement-level player, a special teams kinda guy?

Totally lame to quote myself, but I'm feeling lazy and someone else had asked about him before! Laughing

Best guess is that you will see a wide range of views on Moats from this forum, possibly due to how he has performed (good & bad) in a variety of defensive schemes. IMO, he fits best as a weak inside in the 3-4 as I think this could best hide some of his deficiencies in space. I love his size and he does seem to show up on ST's when needed. Main problem is he seems to always be just a 1/2 -1 step slow at recognizing plays, though once there he is generally a very solid tackler. Compared to most starting LBers, his coverage skills are not horribad, but are below average...that 1/2 - 1 step he gives up being the main problem as most TE's & some RB's can't separate further from that initial gap. Does not possess blazing speed or excellent moves to rush the QB...sacks come more from scheme or effort. He will never be a star, but in the right system surrounded by players (at both LB & S), who can cover his weaknesses, he could be a solid contributor. I would definitely want to hang onto him if we still ran a 3-4. In any wrinkle of the 4-3 however, his main value probably comes from his ST performances instead...tough to admit because I really want to like the guy.

Don't cross the Moats

and most non-bills fans that have heard of him mentioned was probably in reference to knocking out Brett Favre and ending his consecutive games started streak.

To me he is a backup/developmental player who continues to be put in the wrong position. He has shown flashes as a pass rusher but Buffalo played him as a chase and tackle type LB. From what I have read Pittsburgh is doing the same thing.
