The Broncos will be releasing CB Champ Bailey, according to an NFL source. He was set to earn $9M this season with a cap # of $10M

Any chance they bring him back?

No chance according to Lombardi.

If we wanted him back/could sort out a deal, we'd never release him in the first place.

His release isn't official yet.

Quote:
what I know about Champ. His release has not been finalized yet. If he is indeed released, the Broncos will NOT look to re-sign him. Vic Lombardi (@VicLombardi)

This was obvious. I don't think we will resign him. Maybe Falcons because of the Georgia.

Man, we knew this would come, but it still sucks Sad

I like what Rotoworld suggested; with the extra money freed up, the Broncos could pursue T.J. Ward...
Sign D'Qwell and see if he can coax T.J. to follow

Man he's the last of our really long tenured players to go. Really hate seeing Champ getting cut like this especially after the super bowl loss, but he couldn't have stayed on with the team with the contract. Would've been nice to see him brought back on some sort of cheap restructured deal, but this might be the best football move.

I'll miss seeing 24 in the backfield. Hope the Broncos retire his number for all the amazing years, and I hope when he goes in to the hall of fame it's as a bronco.

LOL! Was thinking the same thing. Except, TJ Ward and D'Qwell are far better.

NFL is a business. I love Bailey and everything he has done for this organization but the man is clearly barely a starter level talent anymore.

I have no issue with not bringing him back if we go out and get Byrd, Ward, or a current star studded CB like Verner, Shields, etc. Bailey's dominant play was in the past.

I honesty think we've evaluated where we are and where he is and decided to move on. I reckon if JDR/Fox/Elway thought he was worth bringing back they would have negotiated something. As it stands I dont see him getting much more than Woodson got last year on the open market. I see he's now changing his tune about playing safety as well. May help his status.

It was the right decision. He was going on 36, obviously had lost two steps, had a nagging foot injury and was not a capable boundry CB anymore. He has a chance to play in the slot, but we already have an elite slot CB. Even in the slot he struggles with quicker players. He basically is a below average CB at this moment. That theoretically could change if he totally recovers from his nagging foot injury, but thats far from a guarantee at this junction in his career and at his age. It is also absurd to assume a transition to FS, as we have no indication that he can play safety, a position he has not played in his 15 year career.

He will be missed, but he wasnt a fit and would demand a re-structure far above his playing value.

This regime didnt make this cut to save $$$. They made it to free up $$$ and you can bet your bottom dollar that this cash is going right back into improving this team.

It was bound to happen eventually, but it still sucks to see one of the best, and for many of us, a personal favorite, part ways with the team.

That being said, from a football standpoint it's 100% the right move. Bailey isn't worth that money, and this team shouldn't be concerned with nostalgia at this point. If he wants to come back on a substantial discount, fine, but keeping guys around for no reason comes back to bite you.

It will be weird to see him in anything but Orange and Blue though, but he's a first ballot HOFer and he'll probably retire a Bronco.
