Good. He wasn't worth keeping at $2.5m, hopefully this is a sign Belichick thinks he'll have something to offer next season.

We don't need cap space now though. If Wilfork is released we have nearly $20m in cap room but no one to spend it on.

What's the point of this maneuver?

We had the 2nd fewest amount of players signed coming into free agency. We have cut/lost more guys to other teams than we have brought in.

And having cap space is always a good thing. You can carry over the amount you have left if you have any left.
