Rare I know, but we agree on this player. I'm not aware of anything with respect to his persona, apart from insubordination & material that suggests he's only looking for his money. That's the so-called "choice" he's making. Regarding his game, I wasn't very impressed. Sure, for Buffalo he made his name as a centerfielder breaking on bad throws for INTs. The question I guess is whether Byrd made guys like Marcell Dareus & Mario Williams or whether Buffalo's formidable pass rush made him? Other than that all I found was a guy who didn't possess particularly impressive measureables (5'10" 200+lbs) & who has a reoccurring issue with pain, resulting from having flat feet.

Yeah we're way better off with Rambo back there. Well said. Smile

I must've missed where he said to only roll with Rambo back there. Care to show it to me?

Yeah I guess I didn't see his idea for a better alternative. So if you don't mind maybe YOU could show ME. Smile

And who is this mid tier FS now that Mitchell signed??

The discussion was only about Byrd, correct? If you wanted to have a discussion about a better alternative, perhaps open a thread about the Safety alternatives.

I think we definitely need a FS. 2nd/3rd round or FA. I'm willing to roll with the SS we have.

He definitely said earlier in the offseason we shouldn't make any upgrades at safety because we can just see what the young guys have.

We haven't had a top talent safety with good coverage since Sean died. We need that. If we get Byrd, he can cover up for other guys mistakes the way that Earl Thomas does for the Seahawks.

Yes. But he wasn't saying it here.

And as long as we upgrade the front 7, I'm not that far from the position of not making too much of an upgrade at safety. As you've discussed over and over, the Redskins need to start developing their own players rather than always signing other players from other teams...then having it not pan out...while our players move on and play well for someone else.

Will I be happy if we get a Byrd type of player in the secondary? Sure. But I think we need to see what our youngsters can develop into as long as we upgrade the front 7. I realize you disagree and that's okay.

Why would we draft another safety?

I think that's such a poor use of our limited resources.

We have safeties to develop. 4 of them actually:

Gumbs
Rambo
Robinson
Thomas

The team needs a veteran to help these guys along. We need to sign a vet. It's the only thing that makes sense.

They're still young players. I liked what I saw from each of them at times. Especially Gumbs and Robinson.

Trenton Robinson was a machine for us on special teams last year since we signed him.

If we do pick up a FA FS, I really think Trenton Robinson will beat our Bacarri Rambo for the final safety spot. We need our back up safeties to be animals on special teams and that isn't Rambo.

Again, what are the FA options at FS? ???????

I agree. I don't think Rambo is the answer and Gumbs/Robinson is nothing more than STers. So yes, give me a FS in the 2nd/3rd or FA.

all possibilities/probable upgrades

I'd rather sign a FS:

1. Byrd - long term answer
2. Chris Clemons - long term answer
3. DeCoud - long term answer
4. Kendrick Lewis - possible long term answer
5. Champ Bailey - stop gap/can retire a Skin
6. Brandon Meriweather - stop gap. Played ok for us last year
7. Matt Giordano - stop gap
8. Charles Woodson - stop gap
9. Quintin Demps - stop gap
10. James Ihedigbo - stop gap
11. Jim Leonhard - stop gap
12. Taylor Mays - could be long term answer
13. Nate Allen - could be long term answer, getting him back after losing him in McNabb Trade

Id rather take an ILB, DL, OL or
WR than to draft another developmental safety at this point.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again:

Paying top dollar for someone else's secondary player rarely works out. Taking a mid-tier guy might be the way to go.

Two possibilities:
Thomas DeCoud (29 years old, 6 seasons, 89 games played, 78 games started)
Kendrick Lewis (25 years old, 4 seasons, 53 games played, 50 games started)

Kendrick Lewis is someone that I could actually begin to think would be a good option here.

Maybe, but probably won't be worth the contract he's given.

NFL.com lists him as a SS.

Obviously this is where I would go.

Quote:
5. Champ Bailey - stop gap/can retire a Skin
6. Brandon Meriweather - stop gap. Played ok for us last year

8. Charles Woodson - stop gap
9. Quintin Demps - stop gap

You said it yourself: stop gaps. Won't help the franchise long term both from a continuity perspective or from a long-term plan perspective. Pass on all. I would especially pass on Giordano, Demps and Leonhard since all three have very limited starting experience. Again, NFL.com lists Ihedigbo as a SS.

In four years, Mays has ten starts. Unlikely he's the long term answer. Nate Allen is listed as a SS.
