Josina Anderson ‏@JosinaAnderson 5m

More specifics: Sources: DE Michael Johnson has agreed to a 5-year, $43.75M deal with 24M guaranteed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

So

Bennett: 16 mil guarenteed
Griffen: 20 mil guarenteed
Johnson: 24 mil guarenteed

I was thinking Johnson would get more. Man, did Griffen's agent take Speilman to school or am I not seeing something here.

Partly that. I still think its sort of a bad contract, but I understand market value.

Bennett just really wanted to stay in Seattle so he took less money.

Way to early to have this but that is the rumor a little bit more then our Griffen deal.

Griffen's deal likely isn't that bad.

My assumption is that it's structured much like Brian Robison's. The first two years base salary likely take up at least half of the total guaranteed money. And the signing bonus is then manageable (something around 10M).

Something that has to be remembered with long term deals; more often than not they are two to three year deals that the player only sees years four+ if they're playing well.

Would not shock me to see all the guaranteed money in the first two years, and a roster bonus or two.

I have a feeling we'll make one solid splash and the rest will be the prove it sort of deals or guys coming off of their first contracts who haven't fully lived up to their potential. Raji is definitely a player I feel like would be a Spielman target if he can get him cheap enough. But I'm not sure we'll make a huge splash with free agent CB's or LB's, more the prove-it types of players.

Makes me nervous how the worst defense in the NFL gets much better w/o adding new players. coaches are important, but talent is what wins and loses games. And right now, they have insufficient talent. So far, all they've done is add one bad LBer. That's not likely to fix things. One good signing and bunch of prove its? Not sure how this team gets much better.

Rome wasn't built in a day. The key is drafting better talent, not signing FAs. They're free agents for a reason.

It isn't an either or. You can both sign FAs and draft better. That's just a false dichotomy. No one is saying "draft badly".

If you have money, and don't spend it to get better, then you aren't using all of your resources to get better.

Some of them are free agents because their deals are up, and they want more money, or to switch teams. Being a free agent doesn't mean you are a bad player, if that was your implication.

But, you have to be smart about the money you use on FAs from other teams. Just because they don't appear to be jumping on the high-priced FAs doesn't mean that they aren't going to improve the defense. Heck, FA hasn't even opened up officially yet.

i do like Williams but if this stops us from signing an anchor i may be a little upset, but hope to sign one in the draft

Adding a vet safety doesn’t seem to be an uber-priority for the #Vikings. Nonetheless, a name worth monitoring: Steelers FA @Realrclark25.

not sure what to think about this one. it doesn't really seem to be a big hope to sign him but its a new rumor out there to say the least.

Yeah, I'm not opposed to signing free agents either, but you have to be smart while spending the money, someone like Verner is probably going to garner a good amount of money, so it's better to try and grab mid-level free agents and young free agents who can be a building piece. Only when you are ready to make that final Super Bowl push, then you might grab a veteran to fill a need stop-gap.

When I heard about NO possibly releasing him, I saw that as an extreme possibility. He won't be tremendously expensive, and he's the perfect complementary back to AD.

Maybe the Bucs are just signing Johnson to trade him to is for Robison. Frazier gets his guy, Zimmer gets his. We all win! Laughing
