If this happens the Bears D gets worse by losing Tillman, Wotton and Melton and only adding Bennett. Considerable net loss of talent. If you have the Bears cutting Peppers in this forecast its only worse.

Not all free agents are on the list.

I expect us to add 2-3 more defensive players.

Matt Cassel got 2 years 10 million from the Vikings.

http://football.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/32640/20140307/matt_cassel_re_signs_with_vikings_on_$10m_deal/

Chad Henne Got a 1 year 4.5 million.

http://football.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/32641/20140307/chad_henne_re_signs_on_one_year_$45m_deal/

If these deals are any indication McCown isn't coming back for vet min or a little over. He outperformed both these guys. People can talk all they want about Marshall, Jeffery and Trestman but somebody will outbid Chicago and offer McCown a chance to start.

My realistic dream off season would look like this:

Pep accepts 8 million pay cut.

Resign Melton to 2 year 10-12 million dollar deal.

Ink Michael Johnson and Malcolm Jenkins.

Draft one of Jernigan/Nix/Hageman who ever Emery like best to fill the NT spot.

Draft Deone Bucannon in round 2.

Very solid all around D-line with a decent LB core and secondary. It would be a middle of the pack D which is exactly what the Bears need.

DE…Michael Bennett…experienced, productive & versatile with the ability to rush the passer from outside or inside spots.

DT…Henry Melton/Linval Joseph…if Melton’s fitness and attitude check out I would love to resign him…if not then I would go after Joseph who provides a bigger & longer option at DT…he is a freak athlete in his own right and as much as he has played NT all of his career who has enough athletic ability to play UT on early downs.

S…Mike Mitchell…we need to get more physical on the back end at safety…Mitchell can run and hit as well as any safety…as long as the defensive scheme is simple he would be a solid fit.

Keep Peanut to start at CB & DJ Williams to compete at MLB/SLB...

Then draft best DE/DT in the 1st round...best S in the 2nd round...DE/DT or CB in the 3rd...DE/DT or CB in the 4th...best offensive weapon in the 5th...BPA in the last two rounds.

You think we can afford Bennett, Joseph and Melton?

We can't, and it would be an over-allocation of resources at one part of the defense.

I can get on board with Michael Bennett if Peppers is cut or takes a pay reduction.

I like Ratliff as my NT and Paea as my swing defensive tackle. Linval Joseph would be a luxury that we can't afford at this time, IMO.

Peanut is my favorite defensive Chicago Bear, but I think he will get more money from another team and not return. It's a shame, but in the long run it may be beneficial to us because I'm of the opinion he is breaking down.

Mike Mitchell would be fine by me.

This would leave holes at corner and defensive tackle.

With the 14th pick I would either draft Donald, Hageman, or trade down and hope to land Hageman. Thinking with my ears (read: Phil Emery) I'm not so sure Nix can be ruled out at this time.

With the 51st pick I would take the best corner on the board or draft Kareem Martin and hope I could land a corner in the third.

DE: Bennett
DT: Donald or Hageman
DT: Ratliff/Rookie
DE: Peppers or Kareem Martin
CB: Jennings
CB: Rookie
CB: Rookie
FS: Conte
SS: Mitchell

I could get on board with that. I forsee us drafting some size at DT as well as a project pass rusher (Aaron Lynch?) late in the draft.

Halfway point and you are correct.

No Melton/Joseph...depending on how we feel about Melton's attitude and fitness...if he is back to anything like 100% then resign him...if not move on and make a play for Joseph.

I would really like a better safety than Mike Mitchell.

I have no problem if he is our 2nd safety, but he is not good enough to anchor the back end.

I really hope we get one of the top safeties in free agency, Byrd, Ward, Whitner or draft one that can step in and start.

To get a high quality safety in FA you aren't going to get a high quality pass rushers...we can only afford one and a pass rusher will always hold more value...

Speaking of pass rushers the big question is what is going to happen to Peppers...surely they aren't going to pay him.
