It is not about them just taking Frederick, they could have gotten more out the trade. It was clear 49ers were going to make sure they got their guy, and the Cowboys should have stood their ground and asked for more. Bad trade is a bad trade.

First point: maybe they didn't want to trade out of the first round for one simple reason: first rounders get five year contracts, second rounders get four years. So, if you draft a C who will be a key piece of your offensive line, you might as well secure him for five years, rather than four. Working with that in mind, they had a limited number of teams to work with. If they had only traded down four or five spots, they wouldn't have gotten a third rounder. So maybe they only had 7-8 teams to deal with. Out of those teams, maybe teams didn't want to trade. Of those willing to trade, maybe they didn't have a better third rounder than we did to offer. Remember, that wasn't our third rounder we traded, but the Panthers'. We may, in fact, have been the very best they could have done, under the circumstances. Maybe it doesn't match your idea of what proper value should be, but the only values that ever mattered is those teams are willing to pay. We were willing to trade that third, and they were willing to switch our firsts. All that matters.

I like your comments about length of contract. I never thought about that. But being able to lock a guy up for an extra year does have some value. Especially so in this salary cap era when you could lost him if you don't have him wrapped up.

Donte Whitner, will not be coming back after all... It is almost certain, that GM will be looking to add a S for sure with first couple of picks... My top 2 safeties are: Deone Buchanan 6'1'' 211lbs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57mWwzhwbFo) and Calvin Pryor 5'11'' 207lbs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3y2XwXujkk)... 9ers should add at least one experienced free agent DB; Antonio Cromartie or Vontae Davis...
