http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2014/02/petition-to-split-california-into-six-states-gets-green-light/

If it all goes their way it could be on the ballot in 2016. this was started by Tim Draper and has gotten approval to try and get the required signatures.

I doubt it happens, but what do you guys think?
Will it happen? why or why not

Do you think it should happen, regardless of whether of what you think it will happen?

Sorry bout it, Oakland. You can enjoy your 1 playoff win and then get back to losing 85 games next season.

Link doesn't work for me.

I've heard about possibly splitting us into 2 states (North/Northern and South/Southern) but never 6.

I think it would be cool just because I've never been alive to see a new state created. It's history. I doubt it happens though. What's the reason behind it?

Quote:
If California were its own separate country, it would have the eighth-largest economy in the world.

Shocked

Wow. Did not know that, though it makes sense.

Without going over the line of what's allowed here, aren't they concerned about breaking up their 50+ electoral votes?

Major political differences between different parts of the state, which we can't get into the specifics of on here, but there's vast differences within the state.

I remember on that show "How The States Got Their Shapes" the guy said that if Pearl Harbor didn't happen it would've broke in two, California and Jefferson. The state of Jefferson was to be made the same day as Pearl Harbor so it got pushed back. But it really does need to be broken up

I've heard this for years. There was a town meeting here a couple days ago. I think 6 is too much IMO. I think 3 is ideal. Northern, Central, Southern.

There were 12 countries in the world that had a GDP over a trillion dollars in 2009.

There were also three US states (Cali, Texas, New York). All three of those states had a GDP around the level of India, which has ~1.2 billion people.

Gotta love America. Cool

I just read another article pointing out another more obvious consequence. That's not gonna happen.

It will never happen, but it'd be interesting. Do you remember when they wanted to split Oregon into two states?
