Quote:
Tony Romo
He has a blind spot. His instincts are just average and his accuracy is not consistent enough given the amount of times they let him wing it and thatís what he does...wing it. His mental toughness is suspect and physically he is the danger zone given his two back surgeries.

BEST TO WORSE:
1. 8.9 Peyton Manning
2. 8.8 Tom Brady
3. 8.8 Aaron Rodgers
4. 8.8 Andrew Luck
5. 8.7 Drew Brees
6. 8.6 Philip Rivers
7. 8.6 Cam Newton
8. 8.5 Ben Roethlisberger
9. 8.4 Russell Wilson
10. 8.4 Colin Kaepernick
11. 8.3 Alex Smith
12. 8.0 Nick Foles
13. 7.9 Matt Ryan
14. 7.8 Tony Romo
15. 7.7 Jay Cutler
16. 7.6 Matt Stafford
17. 7.4 Andy Dalton
18. 7.3 Carson Palmer
19. 7.1 Joe Flacco
20. 7.0 Eli Manning
21. 6.9 Robert Griffin
22. 6.8 Sam Bradford
23. 6.4 Matt Schaub
24. 6.3 Ryan Tannehill
25. 6.3 Jake Locker
26. 6.3 Mike Glennon
27. 6.2 Geno Smith
28. 6.0 EJ Manuel
29. 6.0 Terrill Pryor
30. 5.9 Christian Ponder
31. 5.5 Blaine Gabbert
32. 5.5 Brandon Weeden

I don't know that I'd hold Angelo's opinion on QBs that highly considering the guy could never draft and develop one to save his life.

All you have to do is look at his rankings and his opinion is moot. I would take Romo over a few more of the QB's ranked ahead of him because with our previous O-line problems and a total lack of a defense he is the only reason we are even in a game. You gotta mention the Cowboys at some point in whatever you do to get peoples attention.

his opinion is nothing new. It's public knowledge that Romo is all of these things and has been for some time. Most fans, critics and media (if not everyone) have been discussing Romo's flaws for the last 4-5-6 years now.

Move along, nothing new to see here!

I wonder what the consensus would be on Cam Newton if Carolina's defense were average this year. Well, I don't wonder, actually, all you have to do is look back and see what was being said when the Panthers were 1-3.

Would rank Romo about 11th or 12th, but this type of thing is so subjective.

Awful rankings are awful.

2 things: look at the description of the players in Romo's category...

Quote:
Talented, has good history of play, but had a subpar year. Lack of durability, deficiency in an intangible area, poor cast around him or coaching. Any of these reasons may have kept him from playing to his potential. May be a descending player.

I think that perfectly described Romo's year. We said all year that something was not right with Romo and I think coaching, durability and other deficiencies led to him having a sub par year.

Second, the only criticism I really have with Angelo's assessment is he is critical of Romo's instincts. I've always considered his instincts his biggest strengths. For example, a healthy Romo is a wizard at feeling pressure and avoiding rushers. His ducking, spinning etc is largely instinctive. But it's important to separate decision making from instincts. Romo just doesn't always make the best decisions especially in big games where the errors get magnified.

And yet, people on this forum continue to praise his mental toughness even though his meltdowns are well documented. So I'd give a former NFL GM's opinion a lot more weight here.

I wonder if you would feel the same if he had Romo ranked in top 10

He is basing his rankings on the 2013 season. Romo had a better rating and more TD's than 3 ranked ahead of him ( yes, I know stats arent everything ), I would put Romo at number 10, but everyone has their own opinion Smile

I've felt this way about Romo since Day 1, Jimmy. Has his history at QB not given us enough proof of his mental toughness issues?

I agree. I don't think Romo had a good year. I have a different scale, as I am sure everyone does and I have Romo right around 9 for last year. But I understand the sentiment. Romo played shackled and it showed that it wasn't the same magic we are used to.

No way these three are currently better QB's than Romo.

9. 8.4 Russell Wilson
10. 8.4 Colin Kaepernick
11. 8.3 Alex Smith

I never said they were, but I'd argue that two of those three are mentally tougher than Romo. Alex Smith isn't, but Wilson and Kaepernick absolutely are.

its the unfortunate side effect that Romo has yet to win anything.

Russell Wilson - SB victor
Colin Krappernick - back to back playoffs / NFC Champion and made it to the big dance in 12
Alex Smith - was one of the driving forces for getting a team to the NFC championships in 12 / helped turned around a very horrible team in 13
