KeystoneViking's 2014 Mock Offseason 1.0

Opening Notes

• I absolutely love the hirings of Mike
Zimmer and Norv Turner; they are exactly
who this team needs to get back on track.
I have not been so optimistic about Vikings
football in years.

• I realize it’s not popular opinion, but I
am a Spielman fan; I view him as a great
football mind and I feel that this team is
headed in the right direction.

• That being said, I don’t think our team
has as many issues as it appeared to last year;
I feel that we had bad systems in place on both
sides of the ball as well as coaches who refused
to play young talent.

• In my opinion our top 3 needs for the offseason
are QB, CB, and NT; respectively.

Re-sign:

Everson Griffen: Zimmer will turn him into
a top 10 DE in this league

Chris Cook: He’s always had talent, I honestly
think Zimmer will make a huge difference and turn him
into a solid starter.

Matt Cassel: Solid fit for Norv’s offense; can be a bridge
to our rookie QB or a quality backup and mentor to him.

Desmond Bishop: He’ll come cheap. He’s an excellent
linebacker when healthy and is also a great fit at MLB in
Zimmer’s D

• Fred Evans
• Joe Webb
• Joe Berger
• J’Marcus Webb
• Matt Asiata
• Marvin Mitchell
Larry Dean: either Mitchell or Dean will be eventually
cut in the preseason

Restructure:

• Chad Greenway
• Letroy Guion

Let Walk

• Jared Allen
• Kevin Williams
• Josh Freeman
• Jerome Simpson
• Toby Gerhart
• Charlie Johnson

Release:

• Erin Henderson
• Christian Ponder
• John Carlson (retires)

Notable Free Agent Signings

Spielman goes into free agency knowing that
if he is aggressive and can get 2-3 solid starters,
he can then afford to trade up on the draft’s first
night and get the QB that he deems a “perfect fit.”

Captain Munnerlyn, CB, Carolina Panthers:
The Panthers have a ton of free agents
this offseason and simply may not be able
to retain the underrated Munnerlyn. He was
excellent this year and has the ability to play
both inside and out.

Malcolm Jenkins, FS, New Orleans Saints:
See Cook, Chris. This guy can be our Reggie
Nelson and allow Harrison Smith to move over
to the SS which he is a better fit for IMO.

Pat Sims, DT, Oakland Raiders:
Has experience with Zimmer and has proven
to be a solid two-down run stuffer.

McLeod Bethel-Thompson, QB, San Francisco 49ers:
Spielman gets his guy back. He’s actually a
very good fit for Turner’s system and I believe
he will become our #2 QB after this year.

Draft

Texans select Johnny Manziel or Blake Bortles with the 1st pick

Vikings trade the 8th pick, the 40th pick, and
their 2015 second round pick to the Rams in exchange
for the 2nd overall pick: Spielman accomplished
his goal and free agency and got 3 solid defensive
starters, giving him all the motivation he needed to
go up and get his guy.

• Round 1(2): Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Louisville:
Bridgewater is everything that Norv Turner looks
for in a QB: poised in the pocket, terrific footwork,
strong arm to make all the throws, accurate to all
levels, etc. With this pick we have our QB for the
next 10-15 years.

• Round 3(72): Cyril Richardson, OG, Baylor:
Richardson is the ideal Norv Turner lineman and was a projected
first round pick at one point. He had a subpar senior
bowl which causes him to slip all the way to the top
of the third round. He is a massive man who is an
absolute mauler; he will be a large improvement over
Charlie Johnson.

• Round 3(95): Michael Sam, DE, Missouri:
Sam would be great value here and I think he falls
due to the dreaded “tweener” label. He has excellent
burst off the line and is a great fit as a nickel pass
rusher in Zimmer’s defense; he would also allow Everson
Griffen to continue moving inside in those situations.

• Round 4(102): Devonte Freeman, HB, Florida State:
With AP having his third surgery in as many offseasons
and Toby leaving via free agency, a solid backup running
back is sorely needed. Freeman is the total package in
terms of tough running between the tackles, receiving
ability out of the backfield, and pass protecting. He is an
excellent fit for Turner’s offense and will be our 3rd down
back for years to come.

• Round 5: George Uko, DT, USC:
Uko probably could have used another year at USC,
but he just has that raw burst off the line that you look
for in an under tackle.

• Round 6: Andrew Jackson, ILB, Western Kentucky:
A tough, hard-nosed, instinctual linebacker with
obvious starting potential. Not sure why he’s rated
so low by every draft site, but in my opinion he is
an absolute steal at this point in the draft.

• Round 7: Larry Webster, DE, Bloomsburg:
Has that size/speed ratio that Zimmer seems to
prefer. Webster is raw but oozing with potential; he
also played some tight end in college. With some luck,
he could develop into a Robison replacement down the
road.

• Round 7(comp): Colt Lyerla, TE, Oregon:
One of the most talented tight ends in this year’s class
in terms of pure athleticism. He is probably a first or second
round pick without the plethora of character concerns. At
this point he is worth a flier as he is an excellent fit in
Turner’s offense.

Closing Notes/Questions

• There will probably be some uproar about not
addressing the linebacker position but I feel that
between Greenway, Cole, Bishop, Mauti, Hodges,
and maybe even Jackson we can probably find 3
solid starters. I fully expect Greenway to have a
bounceback year in a new system, Cole looked
promising last year and is a great fit at SLB, and
if Bishop can stay healthy he is a very good
linebacker in this league.

• I also feel Childs will be a shell of his former
self and will not make the final 53.

• I was really unsure of what the trade value
would be to move up form 8 to 2. Did i give up too
much? too little?

To come close on the trade value chart you would need to switch next years 2nd to a 1st.

No thanks to the trade up for Teddy.

Completely understand the rationale, but he's not a franchise changing QB; IMO there really isn't one in this draft.

I like the Malcolm Jenkins signing, he's been a target of mine in some GM mocks.

I'm not sure that Bishop will ever play football again.

We also won't be receiving a compensatory pick.

Best mock I've seen yet.

Very glad to see someone else who realizes Cook has been coached poorly and that this new staff might be just what the doctor ordered. Love trading up for Teddy the way that you did; he's a franchise QB cornerstone through and through. Munnerlyn is a major FA target for me, as is Sims.

Superb work. Applause

Im a Speilman fan as well.. Great mock.

And, its a mock that doesnt have us taking Carr...Thank God.....

Big fan of Munnerlyn and Jenkins. I dont know enough about this years draft

prospects to comment any further. I do however agree with you on Cook. Im

not as hard on him as everyone else, and believe if anyone can get the most

out of him its Zimmer.

I don't think Guion's contract can be restructured, either this is the final year of the deal or his base is fully guaranteed. I could be wrong on those two, but I'm pretty sure they can't restructure it either way.

It is the final year of his deal, but none of his base salary is guaranteed.

He can still restructure in the form of a paycut.

Thought so, makes sense, those two terms just register as different things to me, thanks for the clarification.

Understandable.

Restructure is used as an umbrella term that encompasses: extensions, pay cuts, as well as actual restructuring.

I've been begging for an OG, but man, that LB corps will stink. Greenway isn't getting faster next year, and not one other guy is someone they can count on imo.

And, not a Chris cook fan at all. Hoping he's off the roster.

Get a LB in round 3, and I'm happier.

I don't know if Bridgewater is awesome or not, but I'd roll those dice.

Why? he'll only be 30 when the season starts; a torn ACL is not a career ending injury and he should be 100% by summer camp...He will likely have to settle for the vet minimum with his injury history over the past couple years but I don't see any reason why he wouldn't play football anymore.

Every year there are left over compensatory picks (they have to hand out a total of 32). They award any left over picks to team at the end of the seventh round. I guess technically it would be called a supplemental compensatory pick.

I was on the fence if I should just cut Guion; I probably will in my next mock.

I agree; but you can't fill every need in one offseason. I guess I just have a little bit of faith that our young guys (Cole, Mauti, Hodges) will develop and our vets (Bishop, Greenway) will bounce back and we will end up with 2-3 quality linebackers.

I'm very aware of how compensatory picks are awarded. Only once in the last ten years have they added more than 5 compensatory picks based on record. That was the lockout year in which there was very little player movement the year prior due to the looming lockout (13 picks were awarded that year). So, the lack of player movement forced an addition of record based compensatory picks.

That would leave the Vikings on the outside looking in for a compensatory pick

He's had 2 or 3 torn ACL's now? Why would a team even bother with him when he's already 30? He was never that good to begin with.
