FA pickups :

The Vikings are thrilled to open their door to DT Terrance Knighton, and have agreed to a 4 year extension on his contract. He has been a force in the trenches, and hitting 28 yrs of age, will have much to offer this Vikings D over the years. Kevin Williams elected to stay on for a final season, and he will rotate in at times with Knighton to keep both of them fresh for action.

Minnesota is happy to snag Larry Grant from obscurity in free agency. He is a very overlooked LB, and will be given plenty of opportunity to seize the MLB role in this defense. He is a powerful tackler between the tackles, and showed much improvement when in coverage as well. He is eager to show the NFL that he belongs again.

The addition of Jordan Poyer was a throw-in as part of a larger trade, but I am nonetheless happy to add him to the CB battles that will take place in the offseason. Was a big fan of him coming out of Oregon State, and feel that given the chance, he can earn a solid role. He also offers safety and K/P return experience.

DRAFT

With the #26 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft...
The Minnesota Vikings select...

Remarkable prospect and value late in rd 1 in Clinton-Dix. The Vikings are hungry to add a dynamic safety to play along with Harrison Smith, and this certainly appeases that appetite. Clinton-Dix is a physical DB with experience, and has the skills to play in the box as well as the deep middle.

With the #40 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft...

The Vikes are happy to add the highly instinctual Kyle Van Noy to their LB corps. KVN has the versatility to play either OLB spot in this defense. He drops smoothly in coverage and shows an excellent blitz to the QB. He has a relentless motor and keys on the play direction as well as any LB in this class.

I have a top 40 grade on Zach Mettenberger, so selecting him here feels a bit like stealing. Still, I am glad I twice resisted the urge to trade up for him. Zach has terrific arm strength, poise, and that gunslinger mentality to know he can sling it with the best. Having been coached at LSU by an NFL coach and NFL scheme... playing under center... his transition to the pros will be more smooth than most. Zach can take the 2014 season on the sideline... rehabbing the ACL.. soaking up the scheme intricacies without pressure. Beyond that, Zach Mettenberger will almost certainly be the franchise QB for many years to follow.

With the #72 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft...
The Minnesota Vikings select...

The value, fit, and need create the perfect paradise here for Minnesota. Though the Vikes have veteran Larry Grant and youngling Mike Mauti focused at MLB, I felt it was important to increase the overall talent at this position. Back to Skov... he's smart, physical, and will compete right away for a starting MLB role.

With the #76 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft...
The Minnesota Vikings select...

The axiom of " you can never have enough pass rushers " comes to mind. The Vikings don't have an immediate need at DE with Robison, Griffen, and Ayers on the roster... but I won't pass on the top 50 value I have for Marcus Smith. Everson Griffen will get some quality rotation help at RE as this aggressive front 4 attacks opposing QBs.

With the #96 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft...
The Minnesota Vikings select...

I have Ego Furgeson in the 50-75 range, and am glad to see him still available here to finish off the 3rd round. The Vikings now have Terrance Knighton and Sharrif Floyd starting inside, but upgrading the line with more young talent makes sense with the value that Ego presents here. Furgeson has excellent anchor strength and the nasty intensity for double teams. This addition allows Kevin Williams to focus on backing up Floyd as the 3 tech... mentoring him while rotating at times as that penetrating DT.

Another case of great value meeting a real positional need here. The Vikings have a strong OL in all spots except for LG. Joel Bitonio is getting mentioned in the 2nd/3rd round range, and has the versatility to play LT and LG. His play in the trenches is mean and tenacious, and he has power and quick feet to handle whatever is asked of him. For now, we will have him focus on the starting LG job vs 2nd yr man Jeff Bacca.

With the #136 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft...
The Minnesota Vikings select...

After drafting Mettenberger in rd 3, I had planned on drafting at another position here. That said, I just can't pass on the value of David Fales here in rd 5. With no other glaring holes on the roster, it would be wise for Minnesota to take advantage of this value and double up on QB.

With the #168 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft...
The Minnesota Vikings select...

The Vikings don't have an urgent need at WR, yet elect to take the BPA here in speedster Mike Davis. Davis was a very experienced and productive wideout for the Longhorns He is a legitimate deep threat receiver that will fit in well with this offense over the years.
____________________________________________________

With the #200 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft...
The Minnesota Vikings select...

Experienced at safety and corner, Dontae Johnson is long, lean, and quick. He will fight Sanford, Blanton, and the backup CBs for a role.

Terrance Knighton signed a 2 year deal in 2013. He won't be a free agent until next offseason.

I don't think Freeman is under contract so we couldn't trade him to Philly.

Fellas, the players that are FAs are automatically retained by each team in this mock... so they are players that can be traded.

I like that you are stockpiling draft picks. But I don't like the fact that you drafted two QB's. One QB is sufficient IMO.
