Broncos RCB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie told reporters Monday that he'll consider retirement if Denver wins Super Bowl 48.

"I set a goal of five years. Iíve played six," said a straight-faced DRC. An impending free agent, Rodgers-Cromartie is coming off of a fantastic season as the Broncos' No. 1 corner, and could parlay it into a hefty contract this offseason. We expect Rodgers-Cromartie to follow the money here, but his words are something of a red flag. He'll be a risky investment on a long-term deal.

This is really weird news coming out prior to the Superbowl. Anyone have any ideas why he's considering retirement after just completing probably his most impressive season as a pro? He should be in line for a huge payday next contract, but teams definitely have to be weary of his commitment and passion for the game after this news conference.

It seems everyone is trying to go down the Ray Lewis route? Announce retirement and win the SB.

Someone should tell DRC it isn't automatic.

Huh?

Bettis said 2004 was going to be his last year, and that was after a 6-10 2003 season. He was 32 and his knees were blasted. When Ben came in and they went 15-1 and lost the AFCC game, Bettis was going to retire until Ben asked him to play one more year and promised to get them back there next year.

Not quite the same.

How did a guy from 1-AA who only intended to play his rookie contract go top 20?

I can't blame him. He has suffered a lot of injuries this season. Football is a dangerous sport and there is more to life beyond it. DRC doesn't seem to be as interested in creating an individual legacy as much as JJ Watt and Richard Sherman are, so it makes sense that he is willing to retire if he can win a championship ring.

I meant he retired after he won the SB like Lewis did, and like what DRC is saying.

Plus, I doubt he told anyone he only planned to play 5 years.

Yeah but Al Davis didn't draft him.

Oh....I thought you were saying he announced he was retiring if they won.

He is about to turn 28 and is in line for a huge contract after the season he just had in Denver... It's very unlikely he will retire if Denver wins. However, it doesn't do him any good to say something like this. GM's are going to be skeptical about handing him a long-term contract as it sounds like he doesn't have a lot of desire to continue playing football. And it's a shame because he was phenomenal for the Broncos this season.

Didn't Elway do it before Bettis anyways? I'm sure there are numerous examples of players retiring after the Superbowl before Bettis did it.
