I want to call this a good hire, but do people even remember what he fired for in the first place? It's his lack of dicipline for player's. He had more talent than anyone other team in the league on that defense, and still couldn't get them stop committing penalities. I think Buffalo already had a fantastic defense, so if they are good again this year, I'm not going to give Schwatz a dime of credit for not changing anything. And knowing him, the penalties and dicipline issues are going to outweigh any small improvements, if any.

So the Detroit Lions Wide 9 defense will be heading to Buffalo? They have the interior line to run this defense, that seems to be the biggest issue, having those stout players in the middle to let the ends rush up field. I'd imagine that they will need a DE opposite of Mario Williams.

A player like Manny Lawson probably doesnt fit.

Good fit. Schwartz was a very analytical DC when he was with us, and relied heavily on the DL to generate pressure. Should make that Buffalo DL happy.

Jerry Hughes had 10 sacks opposite of Mario this year...

My problem with this is we will probably lose a lot of our blitzing packages but I still think he could be a successful DC here.

He is a free agent too.

Hughes has one more year left on his contract.

If they maintain a good defense doesn't it mean he's done a good job?

The Lions finally are above average on defense during Schwartz's tenure, and it came this year, after we stopped running so much wide 9 and blitzing more- basically, when he stopped having so much control over the defensive scheme.

I have to assume that he is going to tweak his system a little bit, you look at the success we had by blitzing, I think he would try and work the "exotic" blitzes into his scheme.

Didn't the Bills just switch to a primarily 3-4 base defense? Curious hire.

Doubtful, he'll probably lean more towards the 4 man rushes. He'll run his scheme.

Pettine, like Rex, runs a multiple set defense playing to whatever the players strengths are and based on the team they are playing against.

Their defense is suited towards the 4-3 more than 3-4.

Hiring Schwartz was a good move for the Bills, IMO. He did some good things in Detroit, and should make a very good DC in Buffalo.

what good things exactly?

While I highly doubt anyone would ever take him as a HC again (Peter Principle) I guess he'll make good as a DC, but I still don't know what he did that was good in Detroit.

Just curious what makes you think that?

People are forgetting that part of the reason that he got hired as the head coach of the Lions was because he was an excellent defensive coordinator for the Titans.
