I wouldn't count on it, but it's possible that he could bring David Lippincott back to Minnesota as a D-Line coach. He's currently a defensive QC assistant for the Bengals...and was a graduate assistant under Glen Mason. He's a Cincy guy though, having grown up there and his dad was a long-time front office guy with the Bengals as well.

I'd still like to bring in Clancy Pendergast as a defensive assistant. He's primarily been a DB coach, but he coached LBs too.

Be a built in DC candidate should Edwards not be up to the task. He could also install some 52 looks for our defense.

@christomasson: Source tells Pioneer Press deal w/ former Idaho coach Robb Akey expected to be finalized early next week to be Vikings defensive line coach

@christomasson: Robb Akey played at Weber State from 1984-87 when Mike Zimmer was defensive coordinator.

@christomasson: Robb Akey was defensive line coach at Washington State from 1999-2002 when Zimmer was defensive coordinator. Then succeeded him as DC.

We no longer need Jim Tomsula, we've found our mustache.

And somewhat ironically, another former coach from Northern Arizona. Apparently, that school is a hotbed for coach development...

NFL coaches from Northern Arizona include:

Brad Childress
Andy Reid
Bill Callahan
Karl Dorrell
Marty Mornhinweg
Pat Morris
Mike Shanahan
Ken Zampese

Also, other notable names include current Badgers HC Gary Andersen, Ron English, Steve Kragthorpe, Bronco Mendenhall, and former Gophers' HC Joe Salem.

Who was a product of the University of South Dakota, you're welcome. His son, Brad, is QB coach at Michigan State and was the HC of Augustana College here in Sioux Falls.

Have to wait and see but not what I was hoping for.

What's wrong with Akey, Freakout?

Extensive history of working with defensive lines, was a defensive lineman himself, and shows a lot of fire and energy.

I guess the better question would be, who were you hoping for?

I would highlight the history part Laughing

It has been 12 years since he has been a positions coach. I am hoping it is like riding a bike. I mean who exactly has he helped develop that went on to have NFL success? I am really curious.

I honestly would have rather had a more experienced DL coach that has spent at least some time in the NFL.

So far on defense we supposedly have:

DC: Edwards
DL: Akey
LB: ???
DB: Gray
And then we have Adam Zimmer as well.

Anyone think it's possible Edwards could be LB coach with lil Zim as DC?

I sure hope not, for one reason only I just don't like father and son working together, just adds another layer for something to go wrong IMO

Glad he was able to catch on somewhere. Good coach that never got much to work with around here.

Akey, 47, has 19 years experience as a college assistant in addition to his six years as a head coach.

http://www.twincities.com/vikings/ci_25036561/vikings-expected-add-robb-akey-coaching-staff

Akey was fired as the Idahoís head coach with four games left in 2012 after compiling a 20-50 record.

http://min.scout.com/2/1371251.html

He has collegiate coaching experience as a defensive line coach, special teams coach, defensive coordinator and as a head coach.
