perhaps we can use this separate thread to discuss who we'd like to see as position coaches and coordinators, and to announce them as Zimmer assembles his staff.

we can start it out with this quote:

Brian Billick: “The assistants that you hire as a first-year coach establish what you want to do with your program. You saw that with Denny Green in Minnesota, and with me in Baltimore. I had Marvin Lewis, Rex Ryan, Jack Del Rio and Mike Smith on my first staff. They all became NFL head coaches. I also would have Mike Nolan, Mike Singletary and David Shaw [Stanford], other head coaches."

“It is well-established that Mike Zimmer is a tremendous defensive coach. Yet, as a head coach, you can’t say, ‘I’m going to concentrate on my area and let someone I hire take complete charge of the offense.’  Norv Turner is one of the great coaches, and if you’re trying to develop a quarterback — as they will be in Minnesota — there’s none better. But Mike’s also been around long enough to know that a head coach has to be involved in every aspect. Offense, defense, special teams … the coaches you hire are working on your program.”

Arrow Zimmer said he is looking for teachers, and not necessarily clones of his own personal style: “I want guys that will convey the message that I’m trying to convey. They don’t all have to be like me.”

Arrow Just because he’s a defensive coach, he doesn’t plan on staying away from the offensive side, no matter who is hired as offensive coordinator.

Arrow  Obviously Zimmer will be heavily involved in the defense: “It’s always going to be part of my little baby because that’s kind of how I am,” he said. But he didn’t say whether he would actually call the defensive signals on game days. “If need be I will,” he said. “That’ll be a little bit of a transition and I’ll have to work through that.” Zimmer said how things go in preseason games will help determine whether he will call the defense.

As is the case with other heads of teams or companies or departments, he will hire guys he worked with over the years, for many or most of the assistant coach positions.
Who exactly, you may ask? I dunno; those guys who are able to get out of their contracts or whose contracts have expired recently or last year and who were sofa-surfing or coaching in college for 2013.

Does anyone know if the investigation of Preiffer is complete and he has been secretly retained by Spielman or Zimmer-man ?

Same Q about retaining Stewart, WR coach, or other currently contracted Vikings assistant coaches.

Zimmer: “What I’m going to do is evaluate all the coaches that are here. We’re going to continue to evaluate all the coaches on the outside and we’re going to make a decision on all those things collectively. I haven’t made any decision on coaches so far.”

I wonder if Bill Musgrave will be asked to remain on the staff as a QB coach or offensive assistant. I know Turner was hired, but Musgrave was a QB coach and has history with Zimmer, perhaps he would be willing to remain on the Vikings and work under Norv Turner.

OC - Norv Turner
QB - Scott Turner
RB - ?
WR - George Stewart
TE - Mike Mularkey
OL - Jeff Davidson

What about the defense?

DC - George Edwards
DL - ?
LB - ?
DB - Louie Cioffi/Adam Zimmer

I cant imagine that the Vikes will keep anyone from the previous regime on the defensive side of the ball.

It was rumored that Norv was bringing his son to be QB coach.

I heard that as well, but I wonder if they would have room for both of them in some capacity.

If the Vikings want Dunbar and the Jets won't let him go, Zimmer could fix that.

Plus the fact that he was fired by the Vikings.

Oopsey!

What's Dunbar's motivation to return to MN? Get fired again?

As I said above, look for LB, DL coaches that worked with Zimmer in the past, whether they are on an NFL staff, a college staff, or sofa-surfing in 2013. Otherwise, that particular search will require time consuming interviews of 'guys new to Zimmer'.

I wonder if the current position coaches have yet been notified they won't be retained, despite the fact a replacement hasn't been determined? They are probably under a silence agreement in exchange for cash to keep quiet. Can we speculate on who will be released, beyond Singletary? Are any of them traveling to Tampa or elsewhere to find new jobs on Fraziers D staff or other teams?

What is the latest news on the Preiffer situation? I saw that Kluwe changed his statement or his charges or asked for community service and sensitivity training instead of termination of Preiffer. Has the investigation been completed? If anything is holding up the mass-announcement of the entire new coaching staff, that might be it.

Reports just came out within the hour that he is signing an extension with the Jets.
