I don't want anything to do with the 3-4. Our CURRENT defense is a DT and a pass rusher away from being fantastic...

I think we'd get more value from Morgan by trading him than by asking him to play out of position. I'm looking at Rip and Casey at DE... just don't see Morgan fitting in there.

A good starting 4-3 DE with 2 years left on a cheap contract might get us a very nice pick.

Based on the likely acquisition of Ray Horton as our new defensive coordinator I thought it would be interesting to project what our defense could look like next season. Of course Horton runs a base 3-4 with hybrid front looks so our front-7 personnel will need somewhat of an overhaul. Here's what I would like to see happen:

Draft
1. Khalil Mack, OLB, Buffalo
2. Zach Mettenberger, QB, LSU
3. n/a
4. Yawin Smallwood, ILB, Connecticut
5. DeAnthony Thomas, RB, Oregon
6. Will Clarke, DE, West Virginia
7. Justin Ellis, NT, Louisiana Tech

Free Agency (note: I'm just doing the notable positions/players)

Re-sign
Alterraun Verner
Ropati Pitoitua

Sign
TJ Ward
Karlos Dansby
Michael Oher
Donald Brown

Cut
Chris Johnson
David Stewart
Kamerion Wimbley

Projected Starting Defense:

3/4 front
DE: Jurrell Casey
NT: Sammie Lee Hill
DE: Ropati Pitoitua

OLB: Khalil Mack
ILB: Karlos Dansby
ILB: Yawin Smallwood
OLB: Akeem Ayers

CB: Alterraun Verner
SS: TJ Ward
FS: Michael Griffin
CB: Jason McCourty

I think Morgan could actually be a better 3-4 DE than 4-3. He's pretty strong against the run and holding his point of attack but he's always a little late getting to the QB. I don't think he'll ever be more than a 6-8 sack a year guy as a 4-3 end. Put 10 lbs on him and he'll be fine.

Also THE_TITAN I think Smallwood will be gone before the 4th. At least he should be. And if we do draft a QB it'll be in the 4th round or after, imo.

I'm going to agree with rage on the Morgan situation.

Morgan is good against the run as a 4-3 DE playing on the outside. Once you move him inside and ask him to start holding the point of attack against double teams and absorbing blockers so our linebackers are free to move you're taking him out of his element. It's not just a matter of being bigger it's a completely different role.

Not to mention Jurrell Casey and Ropati Pitoitua are much better fits, then Morgan pretty much becomes depth and as rage said we can probably get a decent draft pick out of him considering he is a young and talented player with two years left on a cheap contract.

Trade him for a 3rd or 4th rounder and use it on another LB in the draft.

Wow..... this would be an incredible mistake and a ridiculous reach.

Wait just a Music City minute!!! What did you do with Zach Brown??? Did we just toss him to the 4 winds? And what about Colin McCarthy?

I know I'm in the minority but I think Derrick Morgan could become a very good OLB in the 3-4. I could see him in the mold of a Lamarr Woodley or Tamba Hali (maybe not as good but you get my drift).

I do not see the 275 lb Derrick Morgan covering very many tight ends or running backs.

Or covering receivers in the flat in zone.

As a pure pass rusher? Sure I think he would be great, but I would not ask him to cover anyone.

And put Mettenberger back in the trash where you found him!

Brown could probably play any LB position in the 3-4. He has the size, speed, and has showed the ability to rush the passer as well as cover in space. Although his ability to make a play on the ball on a his receiver needs work.

Morgan wouldn't be the first 3-4 LB with "questionable" coverage ability. Woodley, Hali, James Harrison, Suggs, Ware, Aldon Smith are just a few who have questionable coverage ability.

Stand Morgan up the first two downs and put his hand in the dirt on 3rd down, and I think he could potentially flourish.

Call me crazy... but I honestly think we could get a 2nd for him... A 3rd is definitely the floor on his trade value right now...

I also see the 2 positions as completely different monsters with completely different sets of ability needed. Morgan's value comes as an all around DE. Rip was/is our "strong side" DE who typically played the 6 technique... his transition to a 5 technique DE is smoother. Morgan is more of all around guy... playing anywhere from a 6 technique to a 9. That's where his value lays. If he were asked to go to a full time 5 tech role, I just don't think he'd hold up the whole season or be consistenly effective.

There's plenty of other teams looking for a 4-3 guy just like him...

Ye sorry I forgot about Brown you can switch him in for Smallwood and he could play SAM covering the TE too.

Of course, all this discussion about Morgan is a moot point if they ultimately go with a hybrid. He could still see plenty of snaps at DE with only a few of them coming at the 5 tech...

Maybe it gives Morgan and Horton a year to see if there's somewhere he fits if they go full time 3-4 in '15...
