With all the talk of the Titans being "very" interested in Whisenhunt I can't help to think that Ray Horton would be a viable option at DC if we were to hire Whiz.

Ray Horton is known for his 3-4 defense. Which makes me think about how close we are to a 3-4. If the Colts can make it look so seamless I don't see why we can't. In all honesty I think we are 2 guys away from being a good 3-4 team. Some of our guys would need to gain or lose weight for this to work though.

I think we could go with something like this....

Morgan/Edwards - - - - Louis Nix(Draft)/Hill - - - - - - Casey/Klug

Brown - - - - - - - Dansby/FA - - - - - (Draft) - - - - - - Ayers

I think Morgan and Edwards could beef up a few pounds a hold there own. Morgan is a great DE against the run already. Nix played NT at Notre Dame and could do well for us along with Hill or Martin could switch in and out on passing downs. Casey could lose a few pounds and be a above average 3-4DE. Klug would be a good 3-4 DE I think. He has shown the ability to get after the QB in the past and has good pass rush moves.

Obviously we could keep Brown and Ayers for the OLB positions. Dansby has connections to both Whisenhunt and Horton and could help a ton at ILB. Then we could draft someone in the 2nd or 4th round to come in and play the other ILB position. Maybe a guy like Skov in the 2nd or Zumwalt in the 4th.

Here is a really good read about Ray Horton's defense...

Thoughts?

Edit: Whisenhunt is your new HC!

Brown will never play OLB in a 3-4. He's way too small. Basically Brown and Gooden are the odd men out. Only position i see them playing in a 3-4 is ILB.

Ray is the best DC in the NFL. I kind of wish we'd hire him as a head coach. He does have a few negatives however. His scheme is difficult for CBs to learn. We also were the worst defense on 3rd down and in the redzone.

He does everything else phenomenally. In order for it to work you need a NT like BJ Raji or Phil Taylor. He likes small guys that hit and big guys that can move. You need a SS that is fast, physical and willing to give his body up in order to stop the run. You don't need a bunch of superstars in order to get sacks. We didn't have a single guy get 10+ sacks, but I think we were top 5 in total sacks. You need some big boys at DE. You need ILBs that can defend the pass. Most importantly, you need shutdown CBs.

I don't think we will switch to a 3-4 just yet for sure. We are just better suited for the 4-3 right now, IMO. Why mess with Jurrell Casey's position when he is becoming dominant. I wouldn't be mad either way though I guess.

Horton switched Cleveland from a 4-3 to a 3-4. It's what he knows and what he does best. That's IF Horton comes here. Big IF.

I don't know a whole lot about the 3-4 but if Brown could play ILB we could draft someone like Murphy or Van Noy in the 2nd to fill the other OLB position.

If we do get Horton I say we move Brown inside and draft somebody like Khalil Mack or Van Noy

Mack would be outstanding. God I hope Horton comes here.

If we were to draft Mack (who I love) who would play NT? Or what other options are there in the draft at NT?

I would probably cry tears of joy if we drafted Mack.. Could Hill play nose NT?? Really haven't been looking at NTs because I never thought we would need one

I think Casey could do it. Or draft one in the mid rounds. If Mack is gone, go with Nix.

I hope we run some hybrid of the 4-3 and the 3-4. That's why part of me was hoping to hire Dan Quinn so we could've run the 4-3 under.

He did play 3-4 OLB but he's still getting paid way too much. I highly doubt he'll be worth keeping. We need a dynamic PR and if we switch to a 3-4, OLB needs to be a high priority.

I wouldn't be mad if we went Nix in the 1st if Mack is gone and then try to get Vic Beasley or Van Noy in the 2nd
