Take it for what you will, but Pro Football Focus ranked the Panthers as the 8th best OL.

Wow. Must have been a horrible year for offensive linemen.

The offensive line is really a tale of two sides.

Wharton wasn't great and the quality of his play was inconsistent, but paired with an excellent season from Gross and a good one from Kalil, the result was the left side of the line was pretty good.

Chandler and Bell were awful. So that counter balanced the left side's play. It's hard for me to believe the left side was good enough to elevate the unit as a whole to 8th best in the league though.

Is Pro Football Focus reliable?

Depends on who you ask. A lot of people note that they have strangely high grades for players who gave them interviews when they were lesser known (Evan Mathis was a big one, and he's been graded as the best guard in the league by them for a few seasons now). Overall they're a pretty good service though.

As for our 8th ranked OL, a lot of it has to do with very high grades received by Gross, Wharton, and Kalil. Gross was one of the highest graded OL in the league, and Wharton/Kalil did very well also. Nate Chandler was our worst, and Byron Bell wasn't great either, so its really an issue of imbalance on the line. If we can just get average players at RG/RT, and find a way to keep LG as a solid spot in spite of Wharton's age/Silatolu's injuries, I think we'll be fine in the short run. But what a list like this doesn't take into account is that Gross is nearing the end of his career.

I'd like to see Bell resigned to compete at RG with Kugbila and a cheap FA. Bell is a good run blocker but is not a NFL quality pass protector at T. I think having another lineman next to him would help out a lot.

I think a line of either of these two line ups would be pretty formidable:

Gross - Silatolu - Kalil - Bell - [Insert Rookie mid rounder]

or

[Insert Rookie 1st rounder] - Silatolu - Kalil - Bell - Gross

Granted this is all predicated on Gross coming back on a reduced rate.

our Oline isnt great, but it played good. just not consistent, some games Cam has all game, some he doesnt.

they thing is a lot of cams sacks are credited to cam. that long drive we had against the 49ers down by 10, both of those sacks are on cam. not the online.
