Cap hits of 3.42m and 4.25m on Wendell per PatsCap. 2m saved if he's cut before the season, but they'd only save 500k if they want to cut him next year. Really hoping they draft someone and cut him before the year.

I don't see them "being forced to reach for a center early". It's a good investment in Round 2 if they get the right guy regardless of whether or not they resigned Wendell.

And what if there's a better option in round 2? Or a great trade opportunity? Going into any draft having to fill a specific hole is a losing strategy. And as much as draftniks think every pick is going to work out, it's not usually the case that you find a starter in round 2. And given how important the C position it is, I think it's wise to have a known quantity on the roster in case an upgrade isn't available.

Nobody is going to want to give him a huge deal that the Browns can't/won't match.

But couldn't you say the same thing about Ward to some degree? I'm pretty sure the Browns never made a counteroffer and he didn't get that big of a deal

Ward said the Browns never made him any kind of offer. They didn't appear to have much interest in keeping him. They gave Mack the transition tag, so they definitely have interest in keeping him.

Wilfork restructures
Saints have the least cap space in the league.
Gronk is a ?

A deal that pushes the Saints over the cap
and 2 late 1sts.

It's worth some thought.

Mack is transition tagged though so it's a totally different scenario

I'm having trouble getting my point across clearly. They grossly overpaid for a player who was (conservatively) in the bottom third at his position last year. Overpaying because they wanted a proven commodity is still overpaying. The draft class is strong, whether they spend their 2nd or trade back from the 1st round or trade up from the 3rd, there's going to be an opportunity to get a really good player without spending an average of $4 million over two years. Not to mention guys like De La Puente or Velasco who could have likely been signed for cheaper and who both are in better form than Wendell. No matter what way you spin it, they overpaid. And I'm hoping it's just them hedging their bets, insurance for the draft choice they'll spend to really address the need at the position.

Our point of disagreement is that I think it's a terrible idea to go into the draft having to take a center at all and probably early and then hope he acclimates to the NFL.

As for the supposed overpay - his terms for 2014 seem reasonable given the importance of the position. His terms for 2015 seem pricey but he only sees that money if he's excellent (thus worth it) this year.

As for Velasco and De La Puente - the former is worse than Wendell and the latter may or may not be better, may or may not be more expensive and comes with the risk of not having great chemistry with the other OL.

Desean Jackson wants to play in Oakland so he can officially join his LA Gang.

You do realize that Oakland is a 5 hour drive from L.A. on a good day, right?

It's a 40 hour drive from Philly, yet he is still considered "affiliated".
