LATEST UPDATE: Harris cut, Muhlbach signed, Abdul-Quddus signed

It's that time of year again where we look to the offseason to quench our collective thirst for a better team. Let me just say it's not quite as bad as you've been hearing assuming we could extend a key guy and maybe another.

As I did last year, we'll break it down by position group, and total it up for offense and defense, as well. I will list the following items, in order:

-2014 Cap Hit
-2014 Cap Savings via Cut/Trade
-Years remaining on contract

I used overthecap.com's numbers, and compared them to thenetrat and Birkett's numbers. They only vary by a little bit - in the neighborhood of $2 million for next year, and it looks like overthecap is more up to date. I added Louis Delmas's playing time bonuses to his 2014 bonus proration since neither of the above sites had it.

My Sheet

Data sources:
Over the Cap
The Net Rat
Free Press

Quarterbacks
Matthew Stafford: $15,820,000 | - $17,221,250 | 4 years remaining
Kellen Moore: $576,668 | $570,000 | 1 year remaining
Shaun Hill: UFA

Needs: Need a 2nd string QB. Whether or not that's Shaun Hill is TBD, but Matthew Stafford has shown he can stay reasonably healthy. He hasn't answered whether he can be great. Maybe look to the later rounds of the draft, 4-7.

Running backs
Reggie Bush: $4,500,000 | $1,500,000 | 3 years remaining
Montell Owens: $1,330,000 | $1,205,000 | 1 year remaining
Mikel Leshoure: $1,092,693 | $843,297 | 1 year remaining
Theo Riddick: $517,750 | $449,500 | 3 years remaining
Joique Bell: RFA
Steven Miller: $420,000 | $420,000 | Futures

Needs: I think we need to re-sign Joique Bell. He's a leader by example out there, and deserves 3-4 years here. He's a restricted free agent, so perhaps they'll put a 2nd round tender on him or so. Maybe add a true fullback pending the new staff.

Wide Receivers:
Calvin Johnson: $13,058,000 | - $15,974,000 | 6 years remaining
Nate Burleson: CUT
Ryan Broyles: $1,003,227 | $445,591 | 2 years remaining
Kris Durham: RFA
Jeremy Ross: ERFA
Kevin Ogletree: UFA
Carlin Isles: $420,000 | $420,000 | Futures
Corey Fuller: $420,000 | $420,000 | Futures
Cody Wilson: $420,000 | $420,000 | Futures
Patrick Edwards: $420,000 | $420,000 | Futures

Needs: Yeah, this area needs a ton of help. Here's hoping Carlin Isles can amount to something. Nate Burleson will either have to take a paycut or be released. Broyles is damaged goods. Durham sucks. The only two pieces really worth keeping are CJ and maybe Jeremy Ross.

Tight Ends:
Michael Williams: $511,287 | $495,000 | 1 year remaining
Joseph Fauria: $499,166 | $490,833 | $585,000
Brandon Pettigrew: UFA
Dorin Dickerson: UFA
Matt Veldman: UFA

Needs: 2nd and 3rd string TE should be locked up for the year, but the Lions will either need to draft a TE or re-sign Pettigrew. I'm leaning towards the latter, but can see both sides.

O-Line:
Rob Sims: $3,775,000 | $2,575,000 | 1 year remaining
Riley Reiff: $2,180,100 | $53,300 | 2 years remaining
Leroy Harris: CUT
Corey Hilliard: $1,900,000 | $1,650,000 | 1 year remaining
Larry Warford: $714,250 | $191,500 | 3 years remaining
LaAdrian Waddle: $498,333 | $491,667 | 2 years remaining
Rodney Austin: $495,000 | $495,000 | 1 year remaining
Jason Fox: UFA
Dominic Raiola: $1,500,000 | $1,250,000 | 1 year remaining
Dylan Gandy: UFA

Needs: Lions will need a center, either via re-signing Raiola or through the draft. I can't see them going after a free agent center as evidenced by their lack of financial spending on the o-line. I might look at re-signing Raiola and looking to rounds 4-7 for his replacement, with a year of seasoning. I'd also look at releasing both Rob Sims and Leroy Harris, who eat a collective $4.5m of could-be money. Sims has been disappointing with numerous penalties this season. He's simply not worth what he's making and the Lions might be ready to promote Rodney Austin.

D-Line:
Ndamukong Suh: $22,287,500 | $7,710,000 | 1-2 years remaining?
Ezekial Ansah: $4,226,023 | - $4,701,431 | 3 years remaining
Jason Jones: $3,683,333 | $2,016,667 | 2 years remaining
Nick Fairley: $3,146,500 | $1,723,500 | 1 year remaining
CJ Mosley: $1,725,000 | $1,550,000 | 1 year remaining
Devin Taylor: $570,146 | $344,708 | 3 years remaining
Israel Idonije: UFA
Willie Young: UFA
Andre Fluellen: UFA
Xavier Proctor: $420,000 | $420,000 | Futures
Jimmy Saddler-McQueen: $495,000 | $495,000 | Futures

Needs: The Lions really need to free up some space by extending Ndamukong Suh. They should probably re-sign Willie Young as well and add another talent to the d-line via the draft to keep a pipeline going. Pending the severity of Jason Jones' injury, it may be wise to release him.

Linebacker:
Stephen Tulloch: $5,050,000 | $1,140,000 | 3 years remaining
DeAndre Levy: $3,250,000 | $1,250,000 | 2 years remaining
Ashlee Palmer: $1,583,334 | $1,250,000 | 1 year remaining
Cory Greenwood: $750,000 | $750,000 | 1 year remaining
Tahir Whitehead: $623,000 | $517,000 | 2 tears remaining
Travis Lewis: $584,793 | $570,000
Rocky McIntosh: UFA
Brandon Hepburn: $420,000 | $420,000 | Futures
Jon Morgan: $420,000 | $420,000 | Futures

Needs: Not much. This group was really good this year on 1st and 2nd downs. We could afford someone better in coverage than Ashlee Palmer, but that's probably not worth a big investment, and rather look to develop Lewis or Whitehead in that department. Whitehead has the athleticism to do it. I would honestly try to re-sign McIntosh and go forward.

Secondary:
Louis Delmas: CUT
Chris Houston: $4,800,000 | - $400,000 | 4 years remaining
Glover Quin: $4,550,000 | $350,000 | 4 years remaining
Darius Slay: $1,202,114 | - $467,959 | 3 years remaining
Dwight Bentley: $727,278 | $452,722 | 2 years remaining
DeJon Gomes: $645,000 | $645,000 | 1 year remaining
Jonte Green: $594,250 | $545,750 | 2 years remaining
Don Carey: $996,667 | $196,667 | 3 years remaining
John Wendling: UFA
Rashean Mathis: UFA
Chris Greenwood: RFA
Akwasi Owusu-Ansah: $570,000 | $570,000 | Futures
Isa Abdul-Quddus: $695,000 | $695,000 | 1 year remaining

Needs: The secondary possibly played better when Houston was out down the stretch, which is promising for the core. As you can see, Delmas's cap hit next year is pretty outrageous. They will likely try and extend him this offseason. They would do well to extend him and get a better secondary coach who can reign him in a little more in coverage to play the ball rather than try and murder people. They could also use a true number one corner, but is it really wise to try yet another rookie? If Houston has another down year, he should become cuttable next offseason, especially if any of the young guys step up.

Special Teams:
Sam Martin: $535,075 | $414,850 | 3 years remaining
David Akers: UFA
Don Muhlbach: $1,020,000 | $955,000 | 1 year remaining
Giorgio Tavecchio: $420,000 | $420,000 | Futures
John Potter: $570,000 | $570,000 | Futures

Total Rostered: 51 players
Total Salary Cap Hit: $124,638,425 (includes dead money from players already cut, Delmas bonus which many other sources don't have, Suh pro bowl)
Projected Cap: $133,000,000

Please let me know if you see any errors or something that should be added! Happy mocking.

Thank you thank you thank you. This post makes doing offseason mocks so much easier. I used yours when i did my mock last year and it really helps to be able to come up with reasonable numbers for guys and not just be a will nilly unrealistic with your mocks.

I dont think there would be an issue with a google doc here, but im no mod.

Once again thanks this is a great resource for lions fans

No problem! It always helps me set my expectations for the offseason, so it's in part an exercise of curiosity.

I've updated the original post with a link to the spreadsheet.

With Ndamukong Suh making the pro bowl, he has earned a 1 million dollar bonus and now has the highest cap hit in the NFL for 2014.

Who will be some cap cuts? I think Burleson, Leroy Harris, Rob Sims, Montell Owens, Jason Jones and possibly Delmas could be gone.

I don't see Sims getting cut. It'd just be opening up a hole they need to fill when they have plenty of other issues to address. Jason Jones is a solid player. Both those guys could re-structure if necessary. But Delmas can go any time now.

Why do people want to cut Jones and Delmas? Laughing

Both of them still have plenty of value

Delmas is garbage. He has been overrated so bad since his rookie year. He racked up a ton of tackles on a poor defense and everyone fell in love.

He is not worth that money period.

I agree he's not worth the money, but a trade, pay cut, or extension should be pursued before cutting him.

Why extend him? He is garbage. Sometimes you simply have to cut your losses.

Getting rid of him and extension don't really fall under the same category. It's a position that needs to be upgraded when the opportunity comes along. He's highly overrated on this forum.

I'd rather put his cap savings towards Jairus Byrd or TJ Ward, but I have my doubts about the possibility of either of those. Let's see what we get in for the coaching staff.
