Vs Colts

Vs Eagles

Patrick Peterson usually catches the football any time he gets his hands on it. However at the end of the first half on Sunday he got two hands around the ball and it then fell to the turf incomplete. It feels harsh picking on him after a stellar day in coverage, but this was a key, key play. It was only a few plays later that the Eagles scored a touchdown to close the first half and then built on that momentum to score again with their first drive of the second half. It meant that the hole the Cardinals had to dig themselves out of way just a tad too deep. This game was a case of both teams having chances to make plays and only one team making them.

The first touchdown the Eagles scored via Ertz on Mathieu is entirely on the discipline of Mathieu in coverage. He lets his eyes wander towards the RB on the fake pitch, he does not even take a false step, but taking his eyes of the man he was supposed to be covering was enough to create the separation that led to the TD. Mathieu can use his eyes to make plays in zone coverage, but when he is responsible for a man he needs to play the man first and foremost. He was also lucky to not get penalised a few times earlier in the game in coverage. He tends to get very handsy in coverage and while the penalty he took late in the game should never have been called, there were instances earlier in the football game he got away with a few things.

Jerraud Powers backed up a very good game against the Colts with a poor game vs the Eagles. Not only was he allowing players to beat him in coverage he was missing tackles. He seems to be a very inconsistent player week to week, in the NFL you need to be consistent, right now Powers is not that.

The Daryl Washington numbers do not look good, but they are not really a fair reflection of how he actually player in coverage. He had a pair of throws go just past his fingertips in coverage due to perfect ball placement from Foles.

Obviously the monkey in the room, is the teams struggle against Tight Ends, right now there is nobody on this roster that we can trust enough to matchup with tight ends consistently. This means that at this stage it is going to come down to scheme. Is Bowles going to adjust his scheme to limit the impact Tight Ends are having against our defense. That is the million dollar question.

This is a big worry against the Rams too with Jared Cook. Outside of Tony Gonzalez, I can't think of a quality TE that hasn't burned us. This is definitely something that needs to be looked at in the offseason because we don't have a guy that can cover TEs on this roster.

We need a SS who can cover, another CB, and a pass rusher and this defense is set.

Nickoe Whitley I'm serious this kid can play in the box and has some crazy cover skills. I think he can be better than Bam Bam as long as he watches the hits he makes

Khodder, what do you think this team needs to do differently to finally stop tight ends from abusing this defense? There is an answer somewhere to this question, but Todd Bowles has not figured it out yet.

It really is a tough question because it likely ends up in a philosophy change for Bowles and most defensive coordinators do not like to do that. It is more of a personnel question and the fact that right now we do not have the personnel to match up consistently with the upper tier of tight ends.

It might make sense for you guys to use Peterson against TEs in certain situations (red zone).
