M.A. Mortenson Co. provided an update on construction, previewing the arrival of the star attraction of the project: the biggest, tallest crane. The crane starts rolling onto the site in pieces later this month. It takes 65 truckloads to haul. The crane will be ready to pick up its first piece of steel on July 31. The biggest piece to be hoisted: 600,000 pounds.

Mortenson senior vice president John Wood reported that 400 people are now working on the site daily. In total, 100,000 cubic yards of concrete will be poured. So far, they've poured 17 percent of that, he said. Wood said that through the end of May, $89 million worth of work has gone into the site in six months even though much of it has been in the hole and not visible to the public. Typically, that amount of work takes two years, he said.

Some of the construction workers that are pouring the cement have already tossed quite a few Packers jerseys into the mix. Forever to be entombed.

COOL!!

I wonder if they were attached to any packer fans?

All that gas rising up from their steady diet of brats, beer, and sauerkraut can't be good for the environment...

I actually don't like that at all...because it could end up like an Indian Burial Ground and that they will curse anyone who plays on it.

If you already bought your Vikings season tickets at TCF Bank Stadium behind the south sideline hoping to sit behind the home team, that won't happen. The Vikings will use the north sideline during home games over the next two seasons. The change from the south sideline was made by the Vikings staff, including general manager Rick Spielman and head coach Mike Zimmer, after several visits to TCF Bank Stadium.

The press box and club seating on the south end of the stadium creates a shadow over the south sideline late in the season for the Gophers, who occupy the south sideline during home games. The shadow spills over to the field and eventually creeps over to the north sideline later in the game. This will create a more comfortable environment for the Vikings in their temporary home with the ability to stand in the sun longer during those cold home games late in the season. But the switch will likely disappoint season ticket holders that specifically wanted to sit behind the Vikings bench.

The Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority and Mortenson Construction say one of the largest cranes in the world will be used to help build the $1 billion stadium. The crane will start arriving at the construction site in downtown Minneapolis Monday morning. The crawler crane will arrive in 70 truckloads over 10 days. When assembled, the crane can lift up to 1,250 metric tons.

Assembling the crane's sections will take about 11 days. Once erected, the crane will stand nearly 400 feet high. The crawler tracks are 8.5 feet high. The crane will be on the site for about 15 months.

I guess this will likely surpass the tallest free-standing crane that just worked on the Topeka State Capitol Building? It was the Comansa 21 LC 400 tower crane that stood about 340 feet high over the capitol grounds.

That's what I've heard from people who have driven past the site late nights. I don't think they work overnight on weekends, though.

The Vikings are well ahead of schedule for selling seat licenses for the new Vikings stadium. The hope had been that, by the end of 2014, the Vikings would have secured up to $37 million. In mid-July, they have already sold $51 million in seat licenses.

Been checking the Vikings' webcam on the new stadium.

At this rate, they'll be done with that thing by the start of this season!!
