Mel Tucker tried to run the Lovie Smith defense and it has been a train wreck.

Can you tell us Bears fans what Tucker normally runs?

Big NT?
Blitz Heavy?
Man vs Zone?
Type of CBs?

For the most part, he seemed to abide by a pretty basic 4-3 concept, and just 'letting the players athleticism show through' mentality. Not really much 'flash and dash' or anything particularly exotic to it here.

No, we can't. Because in the 2 and a half years that Mel was actually calling plays, he ran basically three different defensive schemes. In 2010, it was a lot of very soft Cover-2 type stuff because we had garbage for safeties, and that's how Del Rio had the defense set up prior to him having to hand over play calling responsibilities. In 2011, we played a lot of press man. And in 2012, we went to a hybrid zone.

The only real constant was that in our front 7, it was typically a lot of vanilla 4-3 looks. Not a lot of blitzing, just typical vanilla 4-3, line up guys in the same spot almost every time (unless you had a backup coming in). I don't remember many stunts or exotic looks up front.

The press man defense he ran in 2011 was the only one that was any good though, as we were complete crap defensively in 2010 and 2012.

We also can't tell you the type of players that he preferred because our defense was just a hodgepodge of players that Gene Smith liked that didn't really fit together in a real cohesive way. Or when they did fit together, the defense didn't reflect the talent (for instance, having guys who performed well in press man, adding another press man corner who was terrible in zone then going back to a zone defense). It's like there was a complete disconnect between the GM, the coaches and the talent on the field.

Or yeah, that's the long answer. Particularly in regards to the 'player type preferences'. Didn't really know how to get into that, because like iPwn said, Gene Smith never really seemed to have any coherent concept of what he wanted the defense to be. Just collected assorted players (extra points if they were from schools nobody has heard of) and handed the lot to Tucker who basically seemed to go with the strategy of throw it at the wall to see what sticks.

Thanks.

We are trying to figure him out as our defense decays around him.
