It's common amongst Lions fans to bash Brandon Pettigrew. He's inconsistent as a receiver and had two game changing fumbles last year. However, what we often overlook is Pettigrew ability as a blocker and how effective he is at it.

There was a very good article posted here http://www.detroitlions.com/news/article-1/The-under-the-radar-role-of-tight-end-Brandon-Pettigrew/7dfa29fc-56bf-49b5-b642-3b31a6793606 that highlights his blocking ability.

There's also a very good video in the article if you don't want to read everything and "scout" for yourself. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zozrkAdY_7M

He's doing very well at blocking this year and he has also improved in the receiving game after dropping passes in his first couple of games. I like both the way Pettigrew rebounded from his early-season struggles and how the Lions' coaching staff handled him after those aforementioned struggles.

Hopefully another team overvalues him so Detroit cuts ways with him.

Remember what 4-5 missed blocks he had in the second half of last week yet?

Likely responses:
"It's on the film. I shouldn't have to hold your hand."
"I never said he missed 4-5 blocks. I said he blocked terribly 4-5 times. Stop twisting my words."
"I went to school for this for 6 years. I know what I'm talking about."
"LULZ ITS ON THE FILM!"
"Stop derailing this thread."

Not off top of my head and on the road right now thus posting less rap no Tim to look it up. Not going to go down this road. I want him gone. That is all. No new to clutter thread responding to this either.

His blocking can be just as inconsistent as his catching.

His blocking can be inconsistent, but has been pretty good for most of this year... much like his catching. Until (and if) he struggles again this year, those that demanded he be released after week 2 should probably just admit that they were wrong.

His blocking has been brought up before by TL-TwoWinsAway. An he's right, Pettigrew is an above average blocker. Hopefully he can continue to string along good games and be reliable with the ball as he has the last oh? four weeks or so? He's got Heath Miller written all over him as a TE if he can secure the ball and stop dropping key passes.

I've bashed him plenty. Mostly for not living up to the potential of a 20th overall selected TE. An was upset on some of the players we passed on but as the games go back and this year progresses, it's been easier to live with the selection since Pettigrew is looking like a solid player either way. He just might not ever be a real top 5 TE threat like I kind of wanted him to be with the 20th overall selection.

He has actually been making the key catches for the majority of this year.

Inconsistent. Frustratingly bad to making clutch catches.

Sometimes I love the guy and other times I want to see him cut immediately.

I think if he was drafted in the 6th round people would have a different view of him.

if something "can" be inconsistent, doesn't that make it... inconsistent?

Conversely, if his struggles and inconsistencies begin to resurface, you should probably just admit that you are wrong

The main issue is just that a player at his position that is taken with the 20th pick in the first round better do something exceptionally well. He doesn't do anything to WOW you, and his inconsistent play is overwhelmingly frustrating at times. If he was a 3rd round pick it would be more tolerable for people. Especially to use the argument that he blocks well. People don't care about a TE's blocking ability if they're taken in the first round. That player HAS to be a prolific pass catcher and difference maker or else they'll never live up to expectations. It may be unfair to him, but it's true.

So pretty much it was a bold faced lie like we all expected and now you're asking us to all forget about it. Gotcha.

I was as big of critic of Pettigrew as anyone for the first few games of the year, but he has played very well over the last several games and deserves the credit for doing so.
