New England Patriots (7-2) @ Carolina Panthers (6-3)

In case you wanted to re-live the past a little. Wink

This is going to be a tough test for us. Carolina is red hot and winners of five straight. Their defense is one of the best in the league, featuring a good front 7. Hardy and Johnson are great ends. Luke Kuechly is quickly making a name for himself as one of the best MLB's in the league. Cam Newton(who I believe is the second best young QB behind Luck) is big, mobile and tough to bring down. Don't let Steve Smith's age fool you, he can still burn.

I'm excited to see how our offense performs against this tough defense. If we get Vereen back, that's huge. Hopefully we'll have Talib back for this game too.

Next two weeks are going to be a real test for Belichick and this Patriots team. Can't wait to see how they respond.

My prediction? Patriots win 21-17.

If the Pats can build on the momentum the offense built against Pittsburgh this should be a win. If not, it's gonna be a long day on both sides of the ball. The most important thing is to avoid turnovers. That's true every week, but the Panthers have the 2nd most takeaways in the league and that's really been the key to their recent success.
If the Pats can avoid turnovers and keep Cam Newton under 50 yards rushing, I think they win. If not... it's gonna be tough.

Going to need to get the ball out early, the front seven is no joke.

They haven't exactly faced a brutal schedule in terms of passing attacks, hopefully that's masking some deficits in the secondary.

Their ground game could very easily just run all over the DL. Could have the ball for 40+ minutes.

All comes down to the OL and DL.

If Brady is getting pressured/hit/sacked early and often, its gonna be tough. Hopefully the Pats can some type of a run game going to ease the the pass rush.

The DL against the Panthers run game is my biggest worry. Spikes is gonna have to do what he does best.

If Brady is able to get a rhythm going and get more than 2 seconds in the pocket then I think the Pats will be okay against the Panther's weaker secondary.

Pats win 31-24

Patriots after a bye?

Now at maximum strength, expect this to be a blow out. 45+ points incoming.

Rolling Eyes

2010: beat Baltimore 23-20 (OT), lost to NYJ 28-21
2011: lost to Pittsburgh 25-17, beat Denver 45-10, lost to NYG 21-17
2012: beat Buffalo 37-31, beat Houston 41-28

The only really impressive win there was Houston last year.

I see no reason to think the Pats are going to put up 45 points on a good (albeit somewhat untested) D considering Carolina's running game should keep Brady off the field a large portion of the game.

This is a tough matchup IMO. This team has three very good running option in Williams, Stewart, and Newton which just happens to be our defense's weakness. Brady needs to be locked in on quick hot routes to get the offense moving our this is a low scoring game.

20-17 could go either way.

I wonder:
Assuming Talib is back for this game, do the Pats put him on Smith or Olsen? I'm thinking Olsen might be the bigger threat in the passing game at this point because the Pats are gonna be shorthanded in the middle of the field. I think maybe they put Talib on Olsen as they did with Jimmy Graham and shade McCourty towards Smith's side of the field.

Expecting us to be hyper aggressive.ala last week. A two possession lead early and force.Carolina.to have to throw.

They didn't come out hyper aggressive and I wouldn't consider 35 passes/33 rushes as aggressive either. They hit the long pass to Dobson, but otherwise, the offense was very similar in nature to other weeks (and they've tried a few deep balls in prior games).

The only difference between last Sunday and earlier in the season was the balls were caught and the opposing defense was horrendous in all aspects of the game. Having a healthy(?) Gronkowski was nice, but it's not as if they weren't trying to force the ball down the field like that to the WR's earlier in the year. So the play calling and play design didn't really deviate all that much from what we've seen.

Can you give a good reason why you think Carolina's defense is going to be as bad as Pittsburgh's? Or why the 3.8 YPC allowed by Carolina - despite facing some solid run teams - is a fluke? Because if Ridley can't get going, Brady is going to be harassed in a way he wasn't against Pittsburgh.
