So we know the starters:

Ware => 1st rounder, HOFer
Hatcher => 4th Rounder, probowler
Hayden => 6th Rounder
Selvie => 7th rounder

But reading about some of the new guys on the team got me interested:

E Brown => 2009 2nd Rounder
M Austin => 2011 2nd Rounder
D Nevis => 2011 3rd Rounder
T Crawford => 2012 3rd Rounder
K Wilber => 2012 4th Rounder

That is a lot of premium picks from the last few years. I know these guys were FA's for a reason... They obviously couldnt make it on their original teams. But they also were highly drafted for a reason.

What do you think? Do any of these guys have the ability to come in and be a factor this year (or next, for Crawford)? Whats your personal scouting report/expectations on these guys?

I'm reminded of Parcells comment a few years ago... "Somebody thought pretty highly of this player at one point in time." Sometimes players need a change in scenery. Sometimes getting cut is a damn good eye opener. In college, a lot of athletes can get by on superior talent and they think it can carry over to the NFL where everyone is also a great athlete. Getting cut (not getting paid) can light a fire to make a player put in the hard work. Unfortunately, some guys never get it.

I think some of them have ability and others don't. I really liked Marvin Austin coming out of college (save the nutcase issue), didn't like Everette Brown, liked Drake Nevis, was indifferent to Crawford, and didn't know much about Wilber. Obviously, I always want all of our players to work out, but I doubt they will.

If they can be salvaged, Rod is perhaps the best man for the job.

Not only what Slam said, but the other factor could be that maybe they were not a fit for what ever scheme they were drafted for. Sometimes a player just couldn't catch on with a certain scheme. Ala, Bobby Carpenter, he was horrible in a 3-4 as a ILB but has been stable as a 4-3 OLB where he was pretty good at in college at Ohio State.

I think we are being optimistic if we think any of the new guys are going to be better than rotational players down the line. We got lucky with Selvie, and even he probably isn't a long-term starter.

I think it's a real shame what happened to Crawford with his injury. If there is one guy who I think can still be a stud, it's him. Hopefully he recovers well.
