COACHING CHANGES

Head Coach – Lovie Smith
Defensive Coordinator – Perry Fewell
Offensive Coordinator – Randy Fichtner
Special Teams Coordinator – No clue

Smith has become such a common hire in mocks but is such a realistic hire based on Rick Spielman's tendencies and the current personnel. Smith has always coached strong defenses in Chicago and his team's have generally been in playoff contention year in and year out.

In this mock, Fewell is fired and is the scapegoat for the Giants disastrous season. Certainly, Tom Coughlin, Kevin Gilbride and Eli Manning won't be outed. Fewell is known for being a defensive backfield specialist and served in that capacity under Smith in 2005. Fewell has Cover 2 tendencies but has shown to be innovative with various blitz packages and three safety looks.

I suspect Spielman will have an influence in the hiring decision for the offensive coordinator position based on the lack of success Smith had in filling the role in Chicago. Further, I believe that Spielman will push Josh Freeman as the starter and will seek a coach who is willing to work with him for at least one season. Fichtner has coached a similar QB to Freeman in Ben Roethlisberger since 2010 and spent 2007-2009 as the Steelers Wide Receivers coach. I would like to see elements of the Steelers offense added being a vertical, 3 Wide Receiver offense, designed to push the ball down the field. Though, the lack of a commitment to the run game in Pittsburgh is concerning, but I doubt that would be an issue in Minnesota.

PLAYERS NOT RETURNING

TE John Carlson – Released
DT Letroy Guion – Released
LB Audie Cole – Released
S Mistral Raymond - Released

QB Matt Cassel – UFA - Cassel opts to become a free agent after it becomes clear that he will be released in favor of Christian Ponder
RB Toby Gerhart – UFA
WR Jerome Simpson – UFA
WR Joe Webb – UFA
OT J’Marcus Webb – UFA
C Joe Berger – UFA
DE Everson Griffen – UFA
DT Kevin Wiliams – UFA
LB Marvin Mitchell – UFA
LB Desmond Bishop – UFA
CB A.J. Jefferson – UFA

Griffen is given the opportunity to explore the free agent market and receives considerable demand to be a starting DE. Frankly, I don’t see why Griffen deserves a starting spot or a large contract extension but someone will surely overpay for his services. Griffen has been non-existent this season and is completely unknown as a starting RE as many project him to be. Griffen signs a deal identical to Brian Robison's contract to start for the Giants. It should not be difficult to find a part-time role player to fill Griffen’s spot.

CONTRACTS RESTRUCTURED

LB Chad Greenway - Greenway's contract is renegotiated to reduce his salary cap hit by $3,000,000 in 2014.

FREE AGENTS RESIGNED

QB Josh Freeman - UFA - 2 years; $12,000,000
RB Matt Asiata – ERFA
OG Charlie Johnson - UFA - 2 years; $3,000,000
DE Jared Allen - UFA – 3 years; $24,000,000 – Resigned prior to free agency
DT Fred Evans - UFA - 1 year; $900,000
LB Larry Dean - RFA - 1 year; $1,300,000
CB Chris Cook - UFA - 1 year; $2,000,000
CB Marcus Sherels - RFA - 1 year; $1,300,000

With Griffen’s contract negotiations not going anywhere, the Vikings turn its attention to Allen. If Smith is hired, I see him pushing Spielman to keep Allen on the roster to be the leader of his defense and increase the competitiveness in year one, rather than relying on a rookie or an unproven player to fill his starting spot. Smith has also shown a willingness to keep older players around for veteran leadership and stability.

Freeman shows moderate success down the stretch as the Vikings string together a few wins to close the season. Spielman has spoken positively of Freeman and has confidence in continuing with him as the starting QB for 2014. Freeman tests the free agent market searching for a more lucrative contract and a guaranteed starting spot. Freeman finds no takers and returns to the Vikings.

FREE AGENTS ACQUIRED

LB Pat Angerer – UFA: Indianapolis – 4 years; $18,000,000
S Major Wright - UFA: Chicago - 2 years; $7,000,000
DT Vance Walker - UFA: Oakland - 2 years; $3,500,000
CB D.J. Moore - UFA: Carolina - 1 year; $900,000

Angerer is a tough and reliable starter and was at his best in the Colts Tampa 2 scheme a few years ago. I am not sure if Angerer is in the Colt’s future plans but he would be a good fit for the Vikings at MLB, allowing Erin Henderson to move back to WLB. Angerer is from Iowa so that should be a strong selling point for him to consider the Vikings.

Reading through the opinions of Bear's fans, Wright's future with the new regime is uncertain and there may be questions if he is a long-term fit. Wright has struggled a bit this year but his best seasons came in a Cover 2 style of defense under Smith. Wright takes a modest two-year "prove it" contract. Wright is only 25 years old and could be a potential long-term fit to start opposite of Harrison Smith.

Walker began his career in Atlanta as a rotational piece to the defense and has since moved on to a starting position in Oakland. Walker has a compact frame at 6-2 305 pounds and has the look of a typical penetrating NT that Smith's and Fewell's defense has generally preferred. Walker is still young (26 years old) and would ideally be part of a rotation at NT.

Moore had some solid seasons in Smith’s defense as a slot CB from 2010 to 2012 but has never really emerged in Carolina. Returning to this defense may be the best thing for Moore and he will surely get an opportunity to "start" at nickel/slot CB. Moore fits the mold of a typical slot CB at 5-9 180 pounds and is only 26 years old.

NFL DRAFT

Teddy Bridgewater, Marcus Mariota, Jadeveon Clowney, Jake Matthews, Mike Evans and Anthony Barr are the first six players selected. Brett Hundley returns to school in hopes of being the top Quarterback in 2015.

After Mariota, there is only one QB that is viewed as solid early to mid first round pick and that is Zach Mettenberger. Tajh Boyd plummets to round two like Geno Smith last year. After Boyd, teams will have its choice of several different "project" QBs.

TRADES:

The Vikings trade a first round pick (7) for a first round pick (13) and a second round pick.

The Vikings trade a second round pick and a third round pick (via Seattle) for a first round pick (27).

The Vikings trade a second round pick (via trade down) for a second round pick and fourth round pick.

1 (13) – Ifo Ekpre-Olomu – CB – Oregon – via trade
1 (27) – Trent Murphy – DE – Stanford – via trade
2 – Tre’ Jackson – OG – Florida State – via trade
3 – DaQuan Jones – DT – Penn State
4 – Rashad Greene – WR – Florida State
4 – Boseko Lokombo – OLB – Oregon – via trade
5 – Jimmy Garoppolo – QB – Eastern Illinois
6 – Crockett Gillmore – TE – Colorado State
7 – Antonio Andrews – RB – Western Kentucky

Ekpre-Olomu’s height will ultimately be a deciding factor in his draft stock. If the listed height of 5-10 holds true, I see a mid first round talent. Ekpre-Olomu is physical, can play press coverage and is technically proficient. Ekpre-Olomu will immediately compete at slot CB and could eventually replace Cook at RCB.

The Vikings move up in the draft to grab Murphy, who is a tough, physical and versatile defensive end/outside linebacker. Murphy has the strength to take over as the interior pass rusher from day one and could eventually replace Brian Robison at LE, which would allow Robison to move to the interior pass rush position at the end of his contract.

RPMWR19 has convinced me that Brandon Fusco would be better served competing at LG with Baca and Johnson. For this to happen, the Vikings need a day one starter at RG. Jackson is big, powerful and has pretty good feet.

jshowers has done a great job evaluating Jones and I think he would be a really good fit for what Perry Fewell prefers at NT. I see similarities between Jones and Linval Joseph, as being more of a penetrating NT, instead of a gap control or space eating NT.

Greene adds some depth and explosiveness to the receiving corps and should fill in at backup split end with the loss of Jerome Simpson.

Lokombo is an explosive and powerful athlete and could project to either WLB or SLB in the Vikings scheme.

Garoppolo will compete for the third QB job and mainly be a developmental backup option. Given that this is a poor QB class, I don’t expect the Vikings to take a QB early if Freeman returns as the starter and Ponder returns at the backup.

Gillmore and Andrews fill out need depth spots at backup TE and backup RB, respectively. Gillmore has that big frame, similar to John Carlson, to be a back-side TE. Andrews looks like a balanced all-around back and will compete with Zach Line to be the team’s third down back.

Very interesting mock VR. I could see that DE situation happening and I LOVE the Angerer signing. Good draft overall, I would just want a QB a little earlier than that

My concern is which qb stands out? It would be nice to take a qb sooner but why take one early just for the sake of doing it. I can't identify an early round qb worth developing. I like Derek Carr but he is a major project due to the fact he played in a simple offense

. Originally the premise of bringing back freeman was that he played solid abd should some hope by seasons end with mn winning a few games down the stretch. Ultimately I think spielman really does like Freeman hence why he was under pressure to get on the field ASAP. I do agree with preferring a qb earlier but we have to identify one to take and I struggled with this. Mettenberger could have been an option at pick seven or thirteen but I'm not sure his upside is any higher than Freeman's.

Looking to be a poor qb class

Not sure Garopollo will be available that late in the draft. I haven't bought into the hype of him being a first round pick yet, but the kid definitely has some tools to work with.

I could see him being a 2nd round pick in the same vain as a Kaepernick. Either way, I think he would be a good add.

While right now Jimmy might project as a 5th rounder, I highly suspect that he's going to rocket upwards if he continues his current production.

Bridgewater

Mariota (Maybe)
Fales
Manziel
Boyd
Murray
Mettenberger
Matthews

There's a lot more than that.

I agree, if his hype train continues, I believe he will be the final quarterback added to the senior bowl. IMO, right now the top five are locked.

AJ McCarron
Aaron Murray
Tahj Boyd
Zach Mettenberger
Derek Carr

The final spot, in my mind, is down to Jeff Mathews and Jimmy Garoppolo. David Fales may still have a shot, but Mathews and Garoppolo are above him.

This team picks 7th? No way Jose. I would be mightily impressed with Frazier & Co. if they can win two more games. I would still want him fired, but that would be the most impressive feat of his awful career.

And why is Boyd so harshly downgraded after one bad game against a very good team? He's got an impressive resume as a college QB and one game shouldn't doom anyone.

Impressive resume as a college QB means very little in the way of analyzing a QB. I know it's a cliche to go to this, but Tim Tebow had one the most impressive college resumes ever.

Boyd has some serious issues with his game, and I believe they cause him to fall out of the first round.

Sound reasoning for Pat Angerer. I like it. Also love Major Wright.

Ifo is the only DB I'd take in the first round. Tremendous talent and all around player. Not a fan of Trent Murphy, but DE is a need. DaQuan Jones won't last that long. He is starting to get first round love. There are a few personnel decisions I don't see happening, but overall I love where the defense is in this situation.

No chance Boyd goes in the first. Never understood why he was projected there in the first place.

Shows you what I know then. But it's not Tebow's fault that an NFL team drafted a guy who ran that read option system in college and wanted him to be John Elway 2.0

NFL GMs still think they can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear sometimes.

There's a lot more than that.

Fales has look questionable this year and his lack of height and arm strength could hurt him.

Manziel might be lucky to even get drafted, he is a classic case of a hyped college qb that doesn't have a good skill set for the nfl. Throw on his character issues no way mn takes a shot on him.

Boyd's hype is dying considerably.

Murray is too short and doesn't seen to have the passing skills to compensate.

Matthews goes to an Ivy League school, given the track record in the NFL, I'm concerned.

All these guys are like mid round picks or later.

Bridgewater, Mettenberger and Carr look like nfl prospects. I'm on the fence with Mariota but I have him going in the top 3.

Again, I'm not impressed with this class. It's better than last years at the top but there seems to be little quality depth in the prototype
