If you want to extend him, he's gonna have to give up some salary.

This. A lot of salary. His cap hit for next year is $11m. The franchise tags for safeties is just shy of $7m. At his age, Polamalu would not see that kind of money on the market. And while he can make plays, his athleticism is not quite what it used to be. There's probably a reason the team is using him up in the box so much more this year.

I just say that bc he seemed visibly upset with the team's performance in this video.

Any competitor would be. That defense isn't what it used to be.

Also, regarding a paycut, can you really ask him to take one? He's not a shell yet. He's a top 5 S in the NFL right now.

The team has to. As great as a broken up pass is, or stopping a run behind the line of scrimmage, he has yet to create a single turnover. It's not for lack of effort, and teams try to avoid him, but for 11m you need more.

Like I said, offer him an extension that knocks down his cap figures. 2 more years on to his deal at about 6m a year or something along those lines. It's fair for both sides.

If they release Troy to sign Pouncey long term, they better be ready for failure and loss of fans. Troy stays as long as he wants and can and gets paid properly. Taylor, Pouncey and other high paid players to be will feel the effect or better.

The team has moved on from some legendary players in the past. Troy isn't done, but if people can't see the problem with paying players into their 30's because of sentimentality, they have lost sight of the fact that it's a business about winning and to an extent profits.

Taylor's contract needs to be addressed, too. Same situation as Troy. His play hasn't tailed off, but he's at that age where it could come at any time. His cap hit is excessive.

Pouncey is 25. I've been down on him compared to the hype, but a team doesn't get better extending 34 year old players and letting the young guys walk. That's a recipe for disaster and it's part of the reason the team has their current cap situation. They started to lock up one too many at top dollar for too long.

Troy is good. He's not so good right now that he should be making what he is. The market is significantly altered due to the new CBA. If the team was sitting on cap space like a lot of teams, this wouldn't be an issue. But they aren't. Tough decisions have to be made.
Mike Tomlin, January 17, 2017 on the avoiding the Patriots in previous playoffs:
"They haven't had to go through us, either. Stay tuned!"
