No point in delaying the inevitable I guess.

Not much of a surprise. It actually says a lot about where Ratliff is physically/mentally for them to go ahead and make the move now. If he was in any kind of shape to help the team, they would have kept him. I applaud the move. I think that he would have likely been a locker room cancer if things had been allowed to go on.

What do you think? Is he done or does he come back and have a good year with another team ?

What a shame , a 7th rd draft pick who have us some good years. Too bad Jason Ferguson got hurt and we had to move Ratliff inside, things might have turned out differently

#ACCOUNTABILITY

Also - Interested to hear how we pulled this off, cap wise.

Edit:

Quote:
By cutting him now, the Cowboys will stop paying his $1.34 million base salary. The majority of his $10.268 million cap charge will roll over into next year.

WHAT WAS RAT's CAP NUMBER NEXT YEAR?

Quote:
The Cowboys signed Ratliff to a five-year extension worth $40 million and included $18 million guaranteed on Sept. 9, 2011. Two years later they decided to cut him. The move will save $625,000 against the salary cap this year, but he will count $6.9 million in dead money in 2014.

I don't think anyone will be upset with the move, but I would like to know a little more about what happened that caused such a deterioration between the two parties. I know Ratliff and Jerry had some choice words last season, but I'm curious if Ratliff just flat out told the front office that he wasn't going to play this season or just a lack of work ethic? I hope some more information on the situation comes out.

Shocked it happened now, but I love it!!

Show this team is starting to turn the corner on different levels. Get rid of the bloated contract and start holding these players accountable!!

I applaud the front office for this move!

Ratliff will be paid his full $715,000 salary this year. The rest of the dead money from contract will on 2014 cap. Off the books in 2015

Source, said the move was best for both sides. There wasn't about any anger or animosity from the Cowboys, just simple business

Tim MacMahon ‏@espn_macmahon2m
Jay Ratliff will count $6.93 million in dead money against the Cowboys' cap next season.

I dont understand how this is working exactly. According to the above ESPN link, he save $625k this year. There is 6.9M in dead money, but he was supposed to count 8.2. So are we savign 1.3M in next years cap too?

---------------------

http://overthecap.com/cap.php?Name=Jay%20Ratliff&Position=DT&Team=Cowboys

According to that, there is a 6M cap loss for cutting him this year. We dont have 6M... so it must be less due to the season being 1/3 of the way over?

--------------------------------------------------------------------

So I think that this move saves us 1.3M next year, and then a total of $30M is off the books from 2015-2017

^^^^^^^^^^^ is that correct?

We all knew this was coming but not sure I agree with doing it now. The pro is it sends a powerful message to the rest of the locker room and I applaud that. But the con is the cap issue. Had we waited and designated him a post June 1st cut we could have spread the hit out over two years. Now the entire 10 mil cap hit goes into next year. A year in which we are already well over the cap to begin with. So next year we will see the same old crap.

I was really looking forward to see him in a 4-3, since I've always felt that the 4-3 was his best fit. But with that said, he should have been cut/traded at once when he started to get in an argument with Jerry. I lost even more respect for him when he got arrested shortly after the Brent accident.

Sucks to see a fan favorite turn into a lazy POS. I just had a feeling he wouldn't play a snap this season. He didn't give a damn about helping his teammates after watching the D-Line get depleted.

We're better off without him.
