Quote:
The Carolina Panthers have begun the search for a new head coach, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

The actual tweet:

Quote:
Sources: #Panthers have begun laying groundwork for a possible coaching search, doing background checks on candidates. 1 candidate knows.

The phrasing is odd. "Possible coaching search" makes it sound like they haven't fully made up their mind, but once news like this breaks, I can't see any going back.

The timing of this seems a bit bizarre to me as well. Hopefully it doesn't affect player performance on the field.

Why is this in the news? I feel like if a coaching search was being conducted then you keep that behind closed doors. Having this leaked is just dumb and distracting.

I think we all knew it as a possibility, I suspect that the Panthers are getting their ducks in a row to pursue this towards the end of the season.

Hopefully Rivera and the players take this as motivation to play well for their current coach.

Depends on what the players think of Rivera.

Maybe this is one of those leaks that isn't so "accidental". Might be a way to make sure the tenacity we saw when Rivera's back was against the wall week 3 doesn't go away.

Love it.
Win-win.
We make the the playoffs, Rivera stays.
We don't, he's gone.

I get the feeling the players like him. They seem to rally for him which is a good sign.

This report doesn't sound like big news though. It basically says theyre preparing themselves if things don't go well and they have to get a new coach. That's nothing we didn't already expect.

So this didn't really work out.

I could see Rivera being canned after this performance.

Turned off the TV. I'm done.

Burn the house down. The lack of preparation is incredibly evident.

Initially it looked like our staff was great, however failure to adjust in the 2nd half was a huge factor in the loss. Primarily, this loss is on the players, but a lot of the blame should be on Rivera's shoulders as well.

It's becoming obvious that he won't be back next year. I say get someone else in there now and see if they can salvage this. We need a guy like Cowher.

A report that the Carolina Panthers have initiated groundwork for a possible coaching search after the season is "unequivocally false," general manager Dave Gettleman told ESPN.com on Sunday.
