Nate Collins isn't a terrible replacement for Melton. He's not going to make a Pro Bowl but I feel like he isn't a huge liability either. Basically this is comparable to Ian Scott replacing Tommie Harris in 2006.

Marvin Austin anyone?

Was he released or is he just on the trade block?

He was part of the Giants final cuts before the season started.

Seriously? Austin was touted as potential first round pick on this board for the 2011 draft. That's worse than the posters insisting Jake Kirkpatrick was third round talent. Laughing

For the record I was in favor of Austin in the 1st in some point in time.

I am a Nate Collins fan and I think he has played better than Melton to this point of the season.

But what is taking so long to IR Melton and find a replacement?

I think when you have guys like Emery & Trestman at the top we are going to see a methodical approach to every decision and that takes time.

D'Anthony Smith - DL - Free Agent
Seahawks waived DT D'Anthony Smith.
It's a bit of a surprise after Smith signed a "one-year extension" earlier this month, though his deal didn't include any new guaranteed money. Acquired from the Browns at final cuts, Smith was active for two of the Seahawks' first three games, making five tackles. It's possible he'll get plucked off waivers.

Anyone know if he'd be a fit?

The D'Anthony Smith that came out of college a few years back would absolutely be a fit for this defense. He had average size, a quick first step, and flashed good pass rush ability. I thought he would be a borderline starter/good backup type player along the lines of what Nate Collins has become. I haven't seen him play in the NFL though. He has been injured a lot and I was never paying much attention to Jacksonville even when he was healthy, so I have no idea if the injuries have taken a toll on him. If he is healthy, I would like to see the Bears bring him in at least for a look.

Trestman said at the press conference today that Wootton saw extended snaps at the three technique in practice today and that it would continue the rest of the week - all options for that spot are being evaluated.

The Bears have a hole at DT.

Marvin Austin [Miami] and Drake Nevis [Dallas] have been signed today.

And nothing from the Bears with what they are going to do at DT.

Could that mean we are looking at a trade?
What this means is that Phil is not going to jump without careful consideration. Not much is available at a reasonable cost so he is not going to make a panic move now and regret it later.

I knew that, but you could have at least been a little nicer to him... Razz

Welp....

Quote:
D'Anthony Smith - DL - Lions
Lions claimed DT D'Anthony Smith off waivers from the Seahawks.
Fellow DT Justin Bannan was released in a corresponding move. A third-round pick of the Jaguars in 2010, Smith, 25, made five tackles in two games with Seattle. He'll provide depth behind starters Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley

I think that was pretty clearly coming...much like the offensive line the coaching staff will just be looking to get the best 4 on the field so having Wootton inside and McClellin outside might be more appealing than Collins inside with Wootton outside...still need to find depth but going up against a team like the Lions having the best 4 pass rushers available could be our best bet…I could see both Minter & Washington being active this weekend.

Melton was invisible week 1 while he was getting his legs back under him after not playing essentially the entire training camp. He was double or triple blocked on 23 of his 48 snaps against the Vikes, and made some pretty significant plays, including a very important stop on 3rd and short as he met Adrian Peterson at the LOS. Now if you want to be made about something in the Vikes game be mad about the 3 guys who are seeing single blocks all game long because of the attention Melton is seeing. Against the Steelers, I don't think Melton saw a single blocker once, and again made some very significant plays including forcing Ben to throw the ball early and help cause the Wright pick 6. Just b/c Melton wasn't showing up on the stat sheet doesn't mean he hasn't had an impact, b/c he most certainly has. I think you are about to see how important Henry Melton is to our defense, and I know everyone thinks this is going to make him cheap, I'll wager its going to prove how special a 300 lber w/ his explosion and power is and will prove to all doubters how much he is really worth.

Derrick Hopkins is having a coming out party tonight in the Virginia Tech VS Georgia Tech game.

6'0, 312lbs, and explosive. Powerful run stopper, pass rush ability. He'd look great in a Bears uniform. He'd give us a true big body DT for the first time in a long time.

Ya he's looked good. Also watch Calvin Burnett from Oklahoma State and Caraun Reid from Princeton.
